We are seeking a talented and self‑motivated Brake Test Engineer to support the development and validation of automotive brake calipers and brake control systems. This position will be onsite at the Astemo Brake Lab in Farmington Hills, MI. The ideal candidate will be a hands‑on, detail‑oriented mechanical engineer with experience in planning and executing validation test processes for the evaluation of component function and reliability.
The Brake Test Engineer will be working in a culture that fosters creativity and problem solving. This position will play a key role on a team that develops advanced automotive brake control systems for the future.
- Comply with lab safety requirements and wear PPE, including safety glasses and steel‑toe shoes
- Prepare and execute DV, PV, and production‑audit brake tests according to engineering requests, which may utilize a variety of specifications, procedures, and reference guides
- Create and uphold a collaborative work environment by demonstrating and sharing functional and technical knowledge
- Collect test data, perform data analysis, report and present results to Product Engineering
- Take measurements with calibrated instrumentation, make observations, and keep detailed notes
- Gather test requirements and write specifications to achieve validation objectives
- Plan, setup, and realize complete testing systems, which may involve the design and fabrication of fixtures, procurement of sensors and actuators, connection and configuration of data acquisition systems, and development of control software, drivers, or scripts
- Establish networks using communication protocols (CAN, RS‑232, TCP/IP, USB, SENT)
- Evaluate existing validation procedures and test rigs to identify and deliver improvements
- Assist in root cause analysis and subsequent corrective action for encountered failures of hardware or software products
- Attend functional training to learn new skills or methods and actively pursue knowledge of current market and technical trends
- Develop and maintain a high level of communication with cross‑functional teams and associates, including both internal and external organizations
- Support brake lab 5S (cleanliness) activities and put away unused tools
- Seek and promote excellence in all aspects of the business
- Troubleshoot and resolve common test bench issues, as well as less common equipment failures
- Disassemble or re‑assemble brake assemblies and sub‑components as necessary
- Perform any other assignments as required by management or Product Engineering
- Be self‑motivated and independently make smart decisions based on available information
- Possess an ability to perceive and understand a vision, dividing it into prioritized tasks
- Be highly detail‑oriented and organized – maximize efficiency while minimizing errors
- Maintain a positive attitude and develop strong working relationships with team members
- Possess an ability and desire to learn new skills quickly and apply them to daily work
- Demonstrate considerable experience in validation design and development tasks
- Read and understand automotive test procedures, component drawings, and electrical schematics
- Be proficient in advanced use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Exhibit strong verbal and written technical communication skills
- Resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
- Be proficient in data collection and evaluation, including statistical analysis
- Possess knowledge of the IATF 16949 quality system
- Capability to operate CAD software or CMM is desired
BS/MS in mechanical, electrical, or an equivalent engineering discipline, with appropriate coursework, is required.
Experience1 to 5 years of experience in testing of automotive components and systems or integration of automotive hardware and software systems is desired.

Working Conditions Physical DemandsRequired to sit or stand for long durations and occasionally lift and/or move parts weighing up to 40 pounds.
TravelDomestic and international travel (up to 10%) may be required. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license.
