Medical Laboratory Scientist – Farmington Hills, MI

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot applicable instruments and procedures.
  • Provide support in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects.
  • Perform and report assigned analytical tests in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensuring quality control requirements are met.
  • Support and comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and recordkeeping.
  • Maintain turnaround times for results, including STAT or critical results.
  • Track reagent/test kit dates and perform QC analysis to ensure accuracy and instrument function.
  • Notify supervisory personnel of any problems affecting test procedures and report deviations for investigation.
  • Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for physician review.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as required.
  • Assist supervisor with training of other personnel and assume lead responsibilities when delegated.
  • Answer client or lab personnel questions and participate in inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • One (1) year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity testing.
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience, most recent in the present department.
  • BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology; or associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or prior qualification under 42 CFR 493.1433 (March 14, 1990).
  • Foreign‑educated candidates must provide credential evaluation from IERF; U.S.–educated candidates must provide original transcript.
  • Other state‑specific requirements may apply; check with local HR or QA departments.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Lift 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 36–50 lbs seldom; >50 lbs not lifted without assistance.
  • Stand and work at the bench for long periods.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • Use manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments requiring significant manual dexterity.
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge of the designated specialty.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
Skills
  • Proven leadership and problem‑solving skills.
  • Detail‑oriented, independent, with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for courteous communication with supervisors, coworkers, and clients.
  • Strong communication skills for telephone inquiries and confidential client information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems.
Education
  • BS in Medical Technology preferred; or BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology; or associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or prior qualification under 42 CFR 493.1433.
License/Certificate
  • ASCP Certification (Preferred).
