PURPOSE OF POSITION
The OST Specialist supports the academic, social–emotional, and cultural development of Navajo Preparatory School students during after‑school and extended‑learning hours. Grounded in Diné cultural values and the IB Learner Profile, the OST Specialist facilitates structured activities, tutoring support, enrichment opportunities, and mentorship that promote student success and whole‑child development.
OST Specialists help students strengthen academic skills, build confidence, develop practical life skills, and engage in meaningful extracurricular programs aligned with the goals of the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant. This position contributes to creating a safe, supportive, culturally grounded environment that empowers students to make positive choices, explore interests, and thrive as emerging leaders. The OST Specialist integrates the Navajo Preparatory School's mission and the IB Learner Profile with Diné cultural teachings to foster holistic student development.
QUALIFICATIONSAND REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must be 18 years of age to work with students in grades 9–12.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in education, youth programs, recreation, or related work.
- Basic knowledge of learning styles, socio‑emotional and youth development needs.
- Computer literacy and ability to use basic communication and reporting systems.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to always maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
- Ability to work flexible after‑school evening hours and weekends.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid certification within 60 days of hire.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
Preferred Experience:
- Demonstrated initiative, leadership, and dependability in youth or educational settings.
- Associate's degree in education, psychology, social work, human development, recreation, or a related field OR minimum of 9 college credits in a core academic subject area.
- Experience tutoring or mentoring high school students.
- Ability to communicate in Navajo and/or willingness to learn to communicate in Navajo.
- Demonstrated understanding of Navajo language, culture, and values.
- Experience facilitating group activities, youth workshops, or experiential learning.
Experience coordinating logistics for events, trips, or community partnerships.
Required Skills:

- Patience, adaptability, creativity, and enthusiasm for working with youth.
- Ability to assist students in developing study habits, responsibility, and independence.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with peers, supervisors, and community partners to support program goals.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., supervise outdoor activities, and accompany students on local and regional trips.
Desired Knowledge:
- Proficient knowledge, understanding, and respect for the Navajo language, history, and culture.
- Appreciation of the International Baccalaureate and Diné philosophy of learning to support student's residential and day school experience.
- Knowledge in various college and career readiness and real‑world skills.
- Familiarity with data entry systems or databases (EZReports, Modern Campus Involve, Excel, etc.).
Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATIONThe position is placed on the approved NPS Substitute Pay Schedule.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENTSalary and work calendar established yearly by budget and salary scale.
WORK SCHEDULETypical hours are Sunday 5:30–8:30 p.m. and Monday–Thursday, 3:00–8:30 p.m. Flexibility may be required for family engagement nights, field trips, and other special events.
