Position: Welder - 300

Position Function Summary

Under direct supervision, the Welder performs various forms of welding—maintenance, fabrication, brazing and cutting metal components—to assemble structural forms using knowledge of welding techniques. The Welder assists and supports various departments, including Farm Support Services and Technical Services. Welders will have a primary job assignment to a department.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Performs maintenance, fabrication, brazing and cutting using gas and electric welding equipment.
  • Reviews layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders to prepare welding or cutting tasks.
  • Welds metal parts according to material layouts, diagrams, work order instructions, and/or oral instructions.
  • Uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect eyes and guard against burns and flying objects.
  • Cleans and prepares surfaces for welding.
  • Sets up, assembles, and tacks weld parts.
  • Preheats work pieces before welding or bending with a torch.
  • Connects hoses from torch to tanks of oxygen and fuel gas, and operates valves to release mixtures.
  • Operates power tools on ground surface and at times using stepladders; power may be generated by an electric generator or pneumatic system.
  • Operates gasoline welding machine, hand tools, cutting wheel, and grinder.
  • Monitors and reviews material and environmental information to detect or assess problems.
  • Fills cavities or corrects malformation in lead parts, hammers out bulges and bends in metal work pieces.
  • Chips or grinds excess weld, slag, or spatter with hand scrapper, power chipper, portable grinder, or arc‑cutting equipment.
  • Repairs equipment using welding techniques and appropriate welding equipment.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts, refilling holes, and increasing size of metal pores.
  • Repairs worn or damaged irrigation piping, prefabricating steel pipes and fittings to withstand 200 psi pressure.
  • Builds up worn or defective surfaces.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examines work pieces for defects and measures them with a straightedge or template to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Dismantles metal assemblies or cuts scrap metal using thermal‑cutting equipment such as flame‑cutting torch or plasma‑arc equipment.
  • Positions and secures work pieces using hoist, crane, wire, banding machine, or hand tools.
  • Obtains specific electrodes and selects one based on bead and metal thickness.
  • Performs other related tasks such as flame cutting and grinding.
  • Provides information to supervisors, co‑workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e‑mail, or in person.
  • Inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify causes of errors or defects.

Department Job Assignments Farm Support Services
  • Fabricates equipment by cutting, burning, and welding various metals such as aluminum, cast iron, and other metals.
  • Assists with manual labor in digging for underground piping; using a shovel and related tools.
  • Assists in shop with labor duties during downtime.
Technical Services
  • Fabricates equipment by cutting, burning, and welding various metals such as aluminum, cast iron, and other metals.
  • Welds on elevated surfaces up to 80 feet using ladder, scaffolding, bucket truck, scissor lift, or articulating boom lift.
  • Fabricates steel parts and fittings to repair damaged waterlines and recondition irrigation systems.
  • Assists with irrigation system repairs, maintenance, and waterline repairs.
  • Assists with loading and unloading irrigation systems requiring physical movement.
  • Assists with installing waterline pipes such as PVC and steel pipe sizes 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12”.
  • Assists with manual labor by assembling and disassembling new or existing irrigation systems and other facility maintenance when there are no welding work orders.
  • Assists with preparing and placing concrete pads and thrust blocks of water delivery through irrigation systems.
  • Assists with digging for center‑point pad structure, cover, and uncover of underground waterlines and electrical conduits using a shovel or other digging materials.
