Fiber Optics Field Technician I - Farmington, NM

Join Pillar Innovations as a Fiber Optics Field Technician I in Farmington, NM. The general role of the Field Technician I is to string and maintain fiber optic cable, including pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. The technician will troubleshoot, repair, and test fiber lines, performing new installations, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside‑plant locations such as telephone poles, underground services, and conduits. Responsibilities also include terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables to meet customer needs and maximize operating efficiency.

The work will be conducted in communications and power spaces, often at heights and in confined environments.

Responsibilities
  • Safely perform work in communications spaces.
  • Qualify to work safely in energized spaces.
  • Participate in pole‑climbing training.
  • Operate basic hand tools (cordless drill, hammer, wrench, socket set).
  • Qualify to perform work from an elevated position in a bucket truck.
  • Assist in removal of old hardware from poles and installation of new hardware.
  • Provide roadway flagging support and obtain flagger certification.
  • Perform worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections.
  • Conduct minor field repairs on equipment.
  • Strip, cleave, terminate, and test fiber cable.
  • Learn industry‑standard coding for fiber optics.
  • Become familiar with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR, traffic identifiers, light‑source power meter, and fiber‑specific hand tools.
  • Learn proper methods for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables.
  • Perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services.
  • Read and understand manufacturer manuals and standards for operating, installing, and repairing electronic equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues.
  • Install demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipment.
  • Route premise cable both inside and outside of facilities.
  • Complete documentation, including record‑keeping, billing, and inventory.
  • Calibrate fiber optic equipment in the field according to manufacturer instructions.
Qualifications
  • No prior experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience operating ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stand preferred.
  • Experience operating small equipment such as forklift, bobcat, telehandler, or skid‑steer preferred.
  • General construction and/or flagging experience preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain MSHA certification.
  • Comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic math calculation and measurement skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Working Conditions
  • Walk, use hands, and reach with arms to handle tools and controls; climb ladders, stairs, and poles up to 60 ft.
  • Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions.
  • Walk long distances.
  • Lift up to 65 lbs without assistance.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications

The position requires completion of a thorough background check and pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening. Employees must also participate in random, post‑accident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing as required by company policy.
