Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to provide a safe climbing experience and deliver exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and community members. This position is to aide in the overall functions of the climbing wall and responsible for keeping the climbing wall safe at all times.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Understands and enforces all climbing wall and HHPC policies and procedures.
  • Provides quality customer service at all times and shares Climbing Wall event information, safety tips, and instruction to customers.
  • Checks in all climbers at the Climbing Wall desk to issue gear.
  • Completes opening and closing daily inspections of climbing wall, climbing gear and ropes.
  • Monitors all activity on the climbing wall and reports all accidents or issues immediately to DPS, direct Supervisor, and on-duty manager.
  • Ensure all climbers are following industry approved belay methods and standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the climbing wall such as, tightening holds, setting routes, cleaning holds, and fixing bolts.
  • Attends staff meetings and scheduled trainings.
  • Reports any maintenance or gear issues immediately to the Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation.
  • Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of types and instruction in indoor climbing, climbing techniques, knot tying, and belaying.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of climbing equipment use and maintenance of gear.
  • Knowledge of performing rescues, ascending, Top Rope and Lead Belaying.
  • Knowledge of learning styles and teaching methods.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 30 feet and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Communicating ideas effectively for others to understand.
  • Public speaking, interpersonal communication, and instructional methods.
  • Problem solving skills and decision making.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions which may require some judgment. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with detailed and specific instruction as well as, procedures, accuracy, nature and propriety of the final results.

The Guidelines include Climbing Wall Policies, HHPC Policies, San Juan College Employee Handbook, ADA regulations, and other college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines are clear and specific in their application

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of routine and adaptive customer service duties. The variety of customer needs and regular maintenance contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to keep climbers and climbing wall staff safe at all times. promote safe methods of climbing, offer instruction, and to provide fun recreation.
CONTACTS
  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, climbing, and hanging in a harness for periods of time. The employee frequently lifts light objects, climbing ladders, climbing holds, and gear. Staff must be able to ascend to perform rescues and climb to top of wall.
  • The work is performed at an indoor climbing wall. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and Heights up to 30 feet. The work also requires the use of climbing gear, hand tools, drills, and protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position is responsible for supervision over the safety of all climbers and are to manage gear appropriately.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Must be certified in CPR, training provided.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
