Job Description

Longwood University invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Part-Time Yoga Instructor / Education Support Specialist II (T0232) with Campus Recreation's Group Fitness program. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing safe and effective group fitness classes, specifically yoga-based, for students, faculty, staff, and members. Additionally, the instructor will assist participants with equipment setup and provide a motivating and enjoyable environment for participants.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Arrive to class 10 minutes early, prepared to teach, and stay 5 minutes after class to answer participant questions
  • Promote and encourage class attendance. To begin a class, you must have three participants. Continual class cancellations due to low participation may result in dropping the class halfway through the semester
  • Greet participants warmly and enthusiastically, maintaining an inviting and motivating atmosphere and promoting member retention
  • Teach safe and effective group exercise classes to a variety of fitness levels, using appropriate music and choreography
  • Engage the entire group by circulating throughout the class and being aware of every participant
  • Educate participants about proper form, techniques, anatomy, and modifications
  • Recognize, and correct, improper form and technique
  • Assist with maintaining exercise equipment (sound system, steps, weights, resistance bands, balls, etc.)
  • Enforce all Fitness Center policies
  • Track attendance for each class
  • Assist in promoting other fitness and wellness-related programs
  • Assist with special events and promotional opportunities that may take place on evenings, weekends, and across campus
  • Maintain certifications as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate leadership, communication, and customer service skills, and the ability to work with staff, students, and members of diverse backgrounds
  • Display good judgment in the event of an emergency
Requirements
  • Must have experience teaching yoga along with the appropriate certification
  • Commit to teaching at least two classes per week for the entire semester
  • Must be available to work 3-5 hours per week
  • Must have an energetic, motivating, and creative personality
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of strength training and cardiovascular exercise techniques and understand basic anatomy and physiology
  • Must practice and promote healthy lifestyle behaviors and possess knowledge of current fitness industry standards and trends
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification required within 60 days of employment
Additional Information

This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary wage position in pay band
3. Hours worked will vary based on need, but will be limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours maximum per work year. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits do not accompany this position. A successful fingerprint-based criminal background investigation is required.
