The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the Cook‑Cole College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a full‑time, tenure‑track position (#F0083) at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in August 2026.

The Cook‑Cole College of Arts and Sciences provides a strong foundation in liberal arts with a mission rooted in excellence in teaching, mentoring, and community engagement. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers majors and minors in Computer Science and Mathematics, and a minor in Applied Statistics.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of faculty dedicated to excellence in teaching, undergraduate research, and service. Professional responsibilities include teaching 12 credit hours per semester of undergraduate courses in data science and computer science, math, or statistics. These include data science concepts such as data management, machine learning, data ethics, cloud computing, data visualization, and other related topics.

Our curriculum includes guiding students through authentic, client‑based data science projects that emphasize project management, communication, and applied problem‑solving. Additional teaching opportunities may include special topics courses in the faculty member's area of expertise and courses in Longwood's Civitae Core Curriculum.

In addition to the primary responsibility of innovative undergraduate teaching, faculty are also expected to advise students in the major, engage in scholarly activity, and participate in service at the department, college, and university levels. Faculty in this position will play a significant role in advancing the program.

This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Job Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Data Science or related field and able to be credentialed to teach undergraduate courses in Data Science and in one of the additional areas:
    Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • ABD candidates will be considered if they have an expected completion date by August 2026.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching data science using diverse approaches to enhance student engagement and learning is required.
  • Experience with relevant programming languages, such as SQL, R, or Python, is required.
  • Experience in statistics, machine learning, cloud computing, optimization, artificial intelligence, data security, data management, data ethics, and project management is preferred.
  • Candidates with demonstrated college teaching ability preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with diverse populations and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff in support of the university's mission is preferred.

This is a full‑time, tenure‑track faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. A successful fingerprint‑based criminal background investigation is required. Ameri Corps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
