The Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Sergeant.

We are looking for a motivated, dedicated professional who exemplifies strong public-service values and is ready to contribute to our team’s commitment to safety, integrity, and community engagement.

Applicants must be Virginia DCJS Certified Police Officers with a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience.

Additionally, we are excited to offer a one-time hiring bonus of $3,000, contingent upon the applicant’s agreement to serve with the Police Department for a minimum of two years.

Sergeants perform responsible protective service work in the Police Department supervising a squad on an assigned shift.

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following duties:

• Perform the essential job functions of a police officer.
• Act as shift commander and direct the operations and activities of the department on an assigned shift.
• Instruct subordinate officers and civilian personnel as to work assignments and procedures in patrol, investigations, traffic or other assigned areas.
• Direct, review, and coordinate the work of personnel assigned to shift.
• Help evaluate work of subordinates.
• Receive complaints or reports of emergencies, determine need for action, and direct or assist subordinates in handling difficult problems.
• Make arrests and conduct investigations as necessary.
• Complete required reports and testify in court.
• Supervise the preparation of activity reports submitted by subordinates.
• Interview witnesses, suspects, and victims of crime.
• Relieve superior officers in their absence or as assigned.
• Review body and car cameras.
• Perform other job duties as assigned.

The incumbent must be able to work flexible hours, including night shift.

A competitive salary will be offered based on experience and qualifications. Hiring range is $54,786 to $67,500.
