Job Description
Autonomously performs complex diagnostic ultrasound imaging procedures for patients of all ages, under the supervision of qualified physicians for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Diagnostic sonographers take the initiative to confirm the imaging orders for completeness and accuracy. Reviews patient history and supporting clinical data for medical necessity. Responsible for contacting the ordering physician if an inadequate reason for test is supplied.
Sonographers utilize advanced knowledge to perform diagnostic procedures (inpatient and outpatient settings, including portable and O.R. examinations) by producing, assessing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data. Sonographers are required to exercise independent judgment in the interpretation and analysis of exams and provide a preliminary diagnosis of the technical findings to the physician.
- Within a setting renowned for clinical excellence, you will perform diagnostic ultrasounds for the imaging of normal and abnormal structures of the human body and provide quality care to patients of all ages.
- Assess patients appropriately for the procedures ordered prior to, during, and after treatment according to Imaging Services/Departmental Guidelines
- Take part in the training of students and staff as assigned.
- Create a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
- Prepare patients, collect relevant information for completion of procedures, and perform sonographic exams following defined protocols.
- Observe patients conditions throughout the procedure and notify the physician of unusual occurrences.
- Compile appropriate records to expedite results.
- Analyze the quality of images and processes as required.
- Complete data sheet containing pertinent patient information following exam prior to forwarding to radiologist or Cardiologist.
- Explain procedures using the AIDET process and observe patients to ensure safety and comfort during exams.
- Follow department-specific standard work and departmental policies.
- Practice aseptic techniques and good infection control procedures consistent with hospital policy.
- Secure and return supplies and maintain orderliness and cleanliness of the work areas between each patient.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education:
Associated Degree or completion of a Certification Program in Ultrasonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or Radiology upon hire from an accredited sonography program and/or ARDMS registered (or registry eligible) in abdominal, OB/GYN, vascular technology, or Cardiac echo. Registry eligible candidates must become ARDMS or registered in abdomen within 6 months of employment OR ARDMS/CCI registered in adult echo or vascular within 1 year of employment.
Required Certifications and Licensures:
Certified as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or RDCS by ARDMS or Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) by CCI within 1 year of employment. CPR Certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
