Job Description
We’re looking for a Groundwater Modeller with experience of constructing and applying conceptual and numerical groundwater models to join our Southeast Groundwater Modelling Unit. You will help deliver a comprehensive programme of regulatory groundwater model development, update, and use in support of business decisions in local operations to ensure our groundwater models support regulation of groundwater to protect the environment and deliver for the businesses we regulate.
In this role you will support the Environment Agency’s groundwater modelling programme in the southeast of England and be an active member of the wider groundwater modelling community.
The team sits within the Environment Agency Thames Area Groundwater and Contaminated Land team and provides technical support to the areas of Thames, Hertfordshire and North London, Kent, South London, East Sussex, Solent and South Downs. The unit is remotely dispersed and meets monthly in London.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and apply conceptual and numerical groundwater models using MODFLOW and GIS mapping software.
- Support the Environment Agency groundwater modelling programme and contribute to regulatory groundwater model development and updates.
- Provide modelling support for local operations and business decisions.
- Participate in the wider groundwater modelling community.
- Industry or regulatory experience as a groundwater resource modeller.
- Technical skills in hydrogeology, including constructing and interpreting conceptual groundwater scenarios and numerical models.
- Experience with MODFLOW and GIS mapping software.
- Honours degree (or equivalent), ideally MSc level, in geology/hydrogeology or a related discipline.
- Proactive, self‑motivated and a confident communicator.
- Knowledge of Environment Agency groundwater models.
- Knowledge of the hydrogeology of the geological strata found in the Southeast of England.
- Chartership, or a commitment to working towards chartership.
Your base location will be at one of our three area offices in Farnham, Reading or Wallingford (other locations may be considered based on business need and willingness to travel). The team works mostly remotely and meets once a month in London; some travel and overnights may be required.
