Position: Working Foreman - Heritage Carpentry

Buildtonic | South-East England | PAYE or CIS | £55–65k salaried or £260–300/day DOE

The work

We are a UK main contractor specialising in heritage refurbishment and premium residential. Our current pipeline includes a Grade II Georgian house renovation, a Grade II cottage roof remedial package, purlin strengthening and dormer workand a Grade II listed church refurbishment. Tender values typically £300k–£2M, with a steady run of smaller condition‑led remedials alongside.

We need someone who can join the existing team and conduct sites the way they deserve to be run — tools‑on, respectful of the fabric, confident in front of the Conservation Officer, and able to keep a couple of subcontractors moving without losing the standard.

What you will be doing

You will be Buildtonic's face on site. On any given week you will be cutting a scarf joint in a oak purlin, walking a Conservation Officer through a sash sill repair, briefing the lime team on the lath sequence, and writing the weekly progress note that goes to the architect on Friday. You will run the daily plan, the snag list, the H&S file, and the materials call‑off.

You will report straight to the director.

You will be at home here if
  • You have spent at least five years working on Grade II or II
    * listed buildings and can talk through the last three jobs you have led or run.
  • You can splice a rotten purlin, repair a sash sill in‑situ, and frame a dormer into an existing roof without it costing you sleep.
  • You understand that Listed Building Consent conditions are not red tape — they are the brief.
  • You hold CSCS Gold or Black and SSSTS at minimum; SMSTS preferred.
  • You like running a site solo with one to four subcontractors.
  • You can hold a conversation with an architect or structural engineer and uphold professionality at all times.
What we offer
  • £55–65k PAYE or £260–300/day CIS — we are open on structure for the right person.
  • Company van and fuel card, or own van with mileage.
  • £500/year CPD — Weald & Downland, SPAB, Carpenters' Fellowship courses fully supported.
  • Direct line to the director. No middle management.
  • A pipeline of buildings worth being proud of.
How to apply
  • Email a CV and a short note on the heritage projects you are most proud of to , please do not contact us via telephone, applications will be refused in this eventuality. A CV is essential for this role.
