Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Controls Engineering Manager, Technical Leaders, and cross-functional teams to support the Robotics and Controls group’s vision.
- Provide expertise and guidance to the engineering team during early project stages to develop functional specifications and set design direction.
- Design and develop code for automation equipment (PLCs, HMIs, Industrial Robots, Vision Systems) aligning with functional requirements and internal programming standards.
- Act as Controls Project Lead to ensure project targets, budgets, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction.
- Drive best controls solutions by applying standards while working with cross-functional teams.
- Apply critical thinking, risk management, and engineering excellence to projects.
- Lead controls-focused project meetings (offline programming reviews, design reviews, stage-gates) and articulate risks and approaches to internal teams and customers.
- Support status updates, forecasting, and issue/risk management; propose plans to ensure project success.
- Coach and mentor project team members, overseeing offline programming, commissioning, testing, and deliverables.
- Assist mechanical and electrical design teams in hardware selection, testing, and integration (robots, motion controllers, sensors, vision systems).
- Debug and commission control systems during integration at Convergix facilities and customer sites.
- Conduct comprehensive testing to ensure system functionality and compliance with customer specifications.
- Travel to customer and supplier sites for installation, commissioning, and training (up to 20% time, occasional weekends required).
- Collaborate with systems design and other teams to enhance controls technology integration for safety, functionality, and cost-efficiency.
- Ensure adherence to budgets and scheduled delivery dates.
- Work with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to deliver comprehensive automation systems.
- Prepare documentation for each project, including operator, maintenance, and training manuals.
- Provide technical problem-solving support and training to customers.
Note:
The role may require working weekends or outside standard hours. Travel to North American sites several times per year, up to 20% of time.
- 10+ years of proven controls programming and commissioning experience within industrial automation.
- 5+ years of proven leadership experience on large projects and teams in industrial automation.
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering and/or sufficient industry experience and training.
- Strong experience as technical lead on projects with emphasis on Controls Engineering.
- Preference for candidates familiar with PackML, Food & Beverage, or Packaging standards.
- Machine Vision experience; AI/Machine Learning, Cognex or Keyence Inspection experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of custom machine building and processes including iRVision, conveyance, Servos and VFDs.
- Ability to work openly in a team environment and communicate ideas clearly to project teams.
