Position Title
Temporary GEAR UP Academic Coach
Primary PurposeFayetteville State University’s Office of College Access Programs is designed to provide low‑income/potential first‑generation college students (grades 6‑12) with academic support services that will enhance their academic skills, thereby ensuring that these students will complete high school and enroll in and complete programs of postsecondary education. The mission of GEAR UP is to prepare middle and high school students for college through academic preparation programs and scholarships for students, professional development activities for educators, and college access information for students and parents.
A total of 2,400 students are served by the GEAR UP Program in Cumberland County at 4 target schools.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide academic support and serve as a coach at a GEAR UP target school to improve academic mindsets and prepare low‑income/first‑generation students for postsecondary education.
Responsibilities- 50% Student Support Services – Implement educational interventions to prepare secondary school low‑income/first‑generation students for post‑secondary education (college and career readiness); work with students one‑on‑one and in a small group instructional manner on the college choice process using coaching strategies; provide students instruction on college preparation, academic survival skills and academic advisement on secondary and post‑secondary course selection; conduct non‑cognitive development workshops (study skills, test‑taking skills, critical thinking, standardized test preparation, etc);
assist seniors with completing essays, college applications, and the FAFSA; and follow‑up on participants and verify college enrollment. - 30% Student Needs Assessment / Record Management – Identify, recruit and retain participants; complete comprehensive individual needs assessments and develop individual academic plans; review report cards and transcripts; work closely with target school teachers at high school to supplement services not provided for college preparation; maintain files on participants; track services using Scribe database; and submit monthly reports.
- 10% Educational Activities – Plan and accompany participants on college, cultural and educational field trips that are aligned with curriculum (career and college readiness).
- 5% Parent Support Activities – Develop and facilitate workshops for parents and communicate student performance with parents to increase student success.
- 5% Public Relations – Speak to the community and school personnel on the GEAR UP mission and serve on committees as appointed and recruit potential participants for the program in the community and target school area.
A Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Must possess the ability to follow directions to implement evidence‑based program; excellent organizational skills to document services accurately and meet deadlines; effective interpersonal and oral communication skills; an interest in working with high school students; and the temperament for engaging middle and high school students.
Salary$20 per hour.
