Responsibilities- Perform clinical, laboratory and surgical veterinary services for sheltered animals, perform examinations, diagnose, create treatment plans and monitor treatments as needed along with emergency triage and stabilization for sick/injured animals, ensure accurate and thorough record keeping
- Assist with the development of policies, procedures and protocols, identify animal cruelty, consult during cruelty investigations, testifying at court and administrative hearings, participate in the planning of daily veterinary activities to ensure efficient and effective operation, conduct staff training on topics involving animal health, well‑being, medical care or other related topics
- Oversee the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining NCDA and DEA requirements, assist with investigations of animal care ordinance violations which may include bites and attacks or animal cruelty, interact with staff pertaining to issues associated with the health, feeding, husbandry, nutrition, breeding, diseases and injuries
- This job is considered essential to respond in emergency situations
- Availability to assist staff by phone outside of regular work hours to address urgent issues
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree. Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of North Carolina.
Management PreferencesShelter Medicine experience; experience handling livestock, particularly horses, goats, pigs and poultry preferred. Experience with exotic pets such as reptiles, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits preferred;
High volume/high quality spay/neuter experience preferred;
General veterinary practice experience preferred;
Leadership experience preferred;
Experience with pet enrichment preferred;
Animal behavior evaluation and management experience preferred;
Board Certification in Shelter Medicine preferred.
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of veterinary medicine
- Knowledge of methods of safely caring for animals
- Knowledge of species and breeds of animals as they relate to animal behavior, veterinary medicine, and husbandry
- Skill in the clinical and post‑mortem examination of specimens
- Ability to become knowledgeable of State laws and local ordinances relating to the practice of veterinary medicine, rabies, animal control, animal cruelty, and confinement of animals
- Ability to diagnose a variety of animal diseases and to prescribe veterinary treatment or management methods which will control or eradicate the causative organism
- Ability to apply state and federal laws pertaining to a public health veterinary program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to deal constructively and tactfully with coworkers and to maintain composure in stressful situations
- Ability to maintain and review accurate reports, and to testify in court when necessary
- Ability to perform surgical procedures on dogs and cats following standards set by the AVMA and the NCVMB
