Description
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This class is responsible for working as a member of a crew engaged in activities related to the water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems’ construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sewer lines, services, valves, fire hydrants, commercial/industrial meter vaults, piping, manholes, and other related water and wastewater system assets.
The role involves measuring depth and sizes of manholes and pipes, entering manholes, sewer pipes, meter vaults, and other confined spaces, assisting in flow tests, and setting pressure monitoring equipment. The position may operate heavy machinery such as dump trucks, sewer jet/vacuum trucks, backhoes, and other vehicles and equipment. It may also involve interacting with customers and the public. The work is performed under direct supervision, following established policies and procedures.
Extended hours, including weekends and on-call shifts, are required, and work hours may change. Performs related duties as required.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Manual and power construction tools, testing equipment, heavy construction machinery, vehicles, communication devices, and other equipment as needed.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of safety rules and procedures, construction, maintenance, and repair of water/sewer utility lines, structures, and appurtenances; ability to read drawings, plans, and maps; ability to enter confined spaces; effective communication skills; and ability to develop working relationships.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. At least one year of construction/maintenance utility work experience is desired.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Functional Employment Test (FET) required. Must obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A Driver’s License (CDL) within six months, including a Tanker Endorsement if working in the Sewer Crew Section.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform essential functions of the position.
SAFETY HAZARDS: Exposure to weather, waterborne pathogens, confined spaces, chemicals, dust, gases, loud noises, electrical hazards, and other construction-related risks.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As specified in the Safety Manual.
