Primary Purpose of the Position

The Primary purpose of the Facility Maintenance Building Trades – Lead Locksmith will aid the Facility Maintenance Supervisor (FMS) on all matters concerning the operational aspects of the Lock Shop. This position will work with software to design & layout complex master key systems. It will export codes to automated key cutters and CNC machines for cutting and engraving keys, enter personal and department information into the facilities management database, and perform duties including, but not limited to, master keying all cylinder types (desk and padlocks), duplicating & cutting keys, and repairing and installing door, cabinet, and file cabinet locks.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • A valid driver’s license. Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record, preferably five or more years of driving experience with no more than one minor at fault accident or violation in the past three years.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Customer Service: Recognizes potential problems in service and addresses and resolves promptly and respectfully—ability to insist on providing high-quality service for internal and external customers. Demonstrate customer focus by identifying, understanding, and responding to internal and external customers’ needs. Responds to customers’ needs, questions, and concerns accurately, effectively, and on time.
  • Knowledge – Technical: Advises staff of specialized grounds maintenance techniques and processes for use in unusual situations or problems. General knowledge of established grounds procedures and strategies, and special applications required in assigned areas. Ability to follow a daily work schedule, observe the performance of a small work group, and react to situations requiring minor adjustments to routine.
  • Dependability/Attendance: Ability to demonstrate dependability, which requires daily attendance. Ability to report to work daily, for a full shift, at an appropriate time. Ability to submit leave requests at least five days in advance, as much as possible.
  • Communication: Conveys information clearly, confidently, and with proper tone. Facilitates open communication. Uses discretion and demonstrates sensitivity to confidentiality concerns. Listens effectively and provides appropriate feedback. Should check and respond to emails daily—ability to develop and deliver written information to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the message.
  • Leading Work Teams: Ability to establish expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for a group of employees. Ability to motivate and engage employees through effective communication.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Institutional Locksmith Association member.
  • Institutional locksmith Association membership.
  • Certified Journey Level certification and/or Fire Door Inspector.
  • Certification, but not contingent for position.
  • Five years of progressive Building Trades experience at the Journeyman level.
  • Three or more years of locksmith experience.
  • Through knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in general building maintenance and construction trades.
  • Knowledge and skill with Microsoft 365 products, and willingness to learn new programs.
  • Previous lead worker or supervisory experience.
