Position

Field Engineer at ORION

Overview

This is an entry level position accountable for providing field engineering project support. This includes inspection of project materials to be used and providing work control guidelines required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by craft workers. The incumbent will typically work closely with the Project Manager, Project Superintendent, Project Engineer, Safety Representative, and other skilled or semi-skilled craft persons on the jobsite to ensure successful project completion and close out.

The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of ORION which are Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, most importantly with Integrity.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Work with the Project Management Team and jobsite work crews to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new projects.
  • Assist in the development of bid proposals for upcoming marine construction and services projects when assigned to the office.
  • Estimate costs to be incurred in upcoming projects, accounting for materials, services, labor, and other associated costs.
  • Perform drafting, charging, and similar graphical work.
  • Work with Project Manager to ensure procurement of materials from suppliers that are required at the jobsite to complete the project.
  • Inventory checks, examines, and measures materials received to ensure quality and quantity.
  • Interpret project plans and specifications.
  • Provide work control lines and elevations required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by crafts (e.g., forms for concrete pours, anchor bolts, piping hangers and supports).
  • Check as-built conditions using surveying techniques.
  • Provide topographic and cross-section surveys as required by planning and payment quantities; provide quantity calculations as required.
  • Coordinate surveying activities with the assigned engineer to meet construction requirements.
  • Ensure project team members and work crews work in a safe manner and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies.
  • Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives that support compliance with state/federal regulations and improve Company programs.
Employee Safety and Compliance
  • Responsible for incumbent's own personal safety and the safety of all co-workers and others on site.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task whenever an unsafe condition is observed.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies; disciplinary action may apply for non-compliance.
  • Report any violations promptly and may face disciplinary action for failure to report.
  • Perform related administrative and technical duties as assigned by immediate supervision (e.g., certification training, safety training, procedure review).
  • Maintain confidentiality of confidential or proprietary Company information.
Position Requirements

A B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering/Construction Science or related discipline or equivalent work experience is required. Prior hands-on work experience in the marine construction industry as a Summer Intern or Co-op Engineer is preferred but not required. Working knowledge of Project Management & Administration, Marine Construction, Materials Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, Engineering & Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance is expected.

The incumbent must be able to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business, be an effective communicator, and interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.

The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action up to termination of employment.

Physical/Mental Requirements

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. This is a safety sensitive position. The individual must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate PPE to work or visit areas where required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location.

The individual must have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate. The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner in an emergency.
