Professional Development and Leadership
  • The assistant coach will keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with his/her sport by staying current with sport‑specific literature and attending clinics and workshops.
Responsibility for Rules and Regulations
  • The assistant coach will study the rules and regulations associated with his/her sport, including the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which his/her team competes.
Program Promotion
  • The assistant coach will promote his/her sport within the school and encourage students to participate.
Program Organization
  • The assistant coach is expected to hold practice on a daily basis. Absences should be for illness or emergencies only and must be cleared in advance by the building athletic director. The head coach is not authorized to excuse an assistant from practice.
Standard of Care
  • The assistant coach is expected to model safety training relative to his/her sport as demonstrated by the head coach. The coach should have a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills and procedures, including basic taping and first aid functions.
Professionalism
  • The assistant coach is expected to exercise good judgment and project positive coaching behaviors, teaching basic skills, leadership, and team‑oriented behavior with an even‑keel, calm, and positive approach.
Sportsmanship and Ethics
  • The assistant coach must model sportsmanship, humility, ethical behavior, and good citizenship, handling obstacles with grace, dignity, and pride.
Supervision
  • The assistant coach is responsible for participants from the time they report until they leave.
Presentation of Rules/Regulations
  • The assistant coach reinforces eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code as directed by the head coach.
Attention to Eligibility Rules
  • The assistant coach ensures each participant completes eligibility before practicing.
Accident/Injury Procedure
  • Call 911 immediately for serious or difficult injuries. Submit an Accident Report Form within 24 hours of an injury. Report emergencies to the building athletic director and director of athletics.
Meeting Attendance
  • The assistant coach is expected to attend building, district, and league meetings.
Responsibility for Playing Facility and Equipment
  • The assistant coach reports safety concerns and assumes responsibility for equipment and facilities used in the program.
Violations and Ejections Procedure
  • The assistant coach reports violations or ejections to the head coach, building athletic director, and director of athletics immediately after the contest.
Coach Evaluation Process
  • The assistant coach attends an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director following the season.
Assistant Coach as Program Leader
  • The assistant coach meets with the head coach before the season to develop goals and a plan for consistent instruction.
Responsibility for Program Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory
  • The assistant coach is responsible for accounting for all program‑related items checked out at the start of the season.
Program Purchases
  • The assistant coach requests program needs through the head coach and does not purchase items with personal funds.
Fundraising Activities
  • The assistant coach discusses potential fundraising with the head coach and does not raise or handle funds without approval from the building athletic director.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties assigned to support efficient functioning and student learning objectives.
Position Summary

Middle school assistant coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development, including academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships.
