POSITION SUMMARY

High school head coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole‑child development, academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. The position requires knowledge of athletic coaching, safety, and school policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Professional Development and Leadership
    :
    Keep abreast of sport‑specific literature, attend clinics and workshops, and develop coaching plans.
  • Rules & Regulations
    :
    Study and explain Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) rules, federal and school regulations, and league rules.
  • Program Promotion
    :
    Promote the sport locally and wider community; report scores and contest information to media and league website promptly.
  • Program Organization
    :
    Conduct daily practices, coordinate schedules with the athletic director, and determine the system of play for all teams.
  • Standard of Care
    :
    Provide safety training, maintain records, and perform basic taping and first aid.
  • Professionalism
    :
    Exhibit positive judgment, coaching behaviors, and influence student athletes and the broader community.
  • Sportsmanship & Ethics
    :
    Serve as an example of humility, dignity, and ethical conduct.
  • Supervision
    :
    Oversee participants from arrival to departure.
  • Eligibility
    :
    Explain rules, ensure eligibility completion, and present rules during first week of practice.
  • Accident/Injury Procedure
    :
    Call 911 for serious injuries, submit accident reports within 24 hours, and report emergencies immediately.
  • Media Contact
    :
    Provide accurate score reports locally and on the league website after each contest.
  • Meeting Attendance
    :
    Attend required building, district, league, and rules clinic meetings.
  • Post‑Season Awards
    :
    Coordinate with the athletic director for gatherings with participants and families.
  • Scheduling
    :
    Make scheduling recommendations; only schedule weather‑related make‑up contests.
  • Facility & Equipment Responsibility
    :
    Monitor facility condition, report safety concerns and care for equipment.
  • Violations & Ejections
    :
    Report to athletic director and director of athletics immediately after contests.
  • Program Cut & Awards Criteria
    :
    Develop criteria, share with participants and guardians, and pre‑approve by athletic director.
  • Seasonal Summary & Evaluation
    :
    Attend evaluation meetings, present program inventory and goals.
  • Program Leadership
    :
    Meet regularly with assistants, set expectations, and share goals annually.
  • Camps & Clinics
    :
    Obtain advance approval for programs involving students, coaches, or facilities.
  • Travel
    :
    Seek advance approval and ensure travel is within the Northwest with no school time lost.
  • Equipment, Supplies & Inventory
    :
    Maintain an annual inventory, retrieve items after last contest, submit a fine list, mark and number items, coordinate repair, storage, and laundering.
  • Annual Budget Request
    :
    Prepare and submit a budget request with inventory by spring deadline.
  • Fundraising Activities
    :
    Obtain approval for all activities and complete required paperwork.
  • Other Responsibilities
    :
    Perform related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of sport‑specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post‑secondary athletics program or related club coaching.
  • Proven training and experience in presentation of drills, safety factors, and skill application.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Consistent scheduled hours.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Five or more years of paid high school or post‑secondary sport‑specific coaching experience or related club coaching.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course with passing score.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
  • 21 years of age or older.
  • Criminal background clearance.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (hands‑on training).
  • Online Concussion Training (CT) – a free course available at  (applicants can submit prior to completing FA/CPR/CT training).
