Position: Utilities Technician I - Water

Overview

The City of Fernandina Beach has a full-time opening for a:
Department:
Utilities - Water; FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt;

Reports to:

Utility Operations Superintendent;
Pay Grade: 203 ($17.36 per hour).

Minimum Qualifications
  • A.

    Education and Experience:

    High School diploma or equivalency diploma. One (1) year of experience with maintenance work on wastewater/water systems preferred. A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
  • B. Certifications and Licenses:
    Valid Drivers Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement, with an acceptable driving record preferred.
  • C. Knowledge, Abilities, and

    Skills:

    Skills in the operation of hand tools, equipment, and general maintenance practices and methods. Ability to operate heavy machinery preferred. Good physical condition and ability and willingness to perform required manual tasks.
  • Essential Functions
  • Performs skilled maintenance on the water collections systems.
  • Operates various tools and maintenance equipment as required in performance of job functions.
  • Ensures the safe operating conditions per work site, i.e. setting barricades, cones and signs’ monitoring and directing traffic.
  • Uses a variety of handheld tools and equipment applicable to assigned work area, i.e. hand tools, shovels, saws, drills, and pipe cutters.
  • Observes safe and proper operating procedures when operating trucks, equipment, machinery, and/or tools, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Drives heavy duty trucks as needed, i.e, dump trucks, aerial trucks
  • Operates heavy equipment skillfully as needed, i.e, forklifts, tractors, excavators
  • Performs traffic control activities as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performance Aptitudes
    • Compile, assemble, copy, record, and/or transcribe data and/or information according to a prescribed schema or plan.
    • Provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
    • Ability to safely operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
    • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information.
    • Ability to work in team environment and communicate both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
    • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties.
    ADA Compliance Physical Ability

    Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, and involving stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.

    Sensory Requirements

    Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

    Environmental Factors

    Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as various weather conditions, dust, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, bright/dim light, traffic hazards, and/or toxic/poisonous agents. May be required to work during Tropical storms/Hurricanes or a State of Emergency.
