Position: Driver Apprentice-City

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks.
  • Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment.
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
  • Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck.
  • Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope.
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
  • Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation.
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, confirming placarding matches hazmat shipments.
  • Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events such as delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc.
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs.
  • Ask customers for additional business and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities.
  • Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler.
  • Chain vehicle tires, as required.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, company policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or a commercial learner permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification.
  • Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations.
  • Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day.
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather.
  • Exposure to noise and vibration.
  • Exposure to dust and diesel fumes.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations.
  • Hours may vary due to operational need.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Pay Transparency:
The compensation listed reflects the pay range/rate of pay reasonably expected for this position. If this opportunity includes multiple job levels, pay information represents the min/max range for all levels. Actual pay is determined by job-related factors permitted by law, such as relevant experience, tenure, market level, pay at the location, performance, schedule, and work assignment. 6.67–13.34 hours vacation per month based on service time, 8 paid holidays.

Pay Range: $26.06 - $31.04 per hour.

Starting Rate of Pay: $26.06 / hour.
