Motor Vehicle Inspector
Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol
Location:
8210 County Road 140, Findlay 45840 (Hancock County)
Work hours:
8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; working days and hours may vary.
- Inspect motor vehicles—including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled and salvage vehicles—to determine whether they are unsafe, improperly equipped, or if equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law. This includes entering and exiting vehicles, using a "creeper" to crawl under vehicle to visually check mechanical components.
- Enter and retrieve information from numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases.
- Complete inspection forms and affix inspection decals to vehicles that pass.
- Operate the state-owned motor vehicle inspection vehicle to transport inspection equipment.
- Inform the owner and/or operator of necessary repairs or adjustments to place the vehicle in safe condition.
- 6 months of training or 6 months of experience in automotive maintenance & repair and/or mechanical vehicle inspections.
- 6 months of experience using a personal computer and associated office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook). Explain how you have met this requirement in your current or previous work history.
- Formal education in arithmetic (addition & subtraction) and in reading, writing, and speaking common English vocabulary.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Minimum Class
Qualifications:

- Autonomous work with precision and attention to detail.
- Decision making and situational awareness.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Knowledge of basic documentation, inspection principles, automotive safety, public relations, and public safety.
- Multiple pay increases during the first years of service.
- Free parking.
$22.96 – $27.92 per hour
