About the position

Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief, the Battalion Chief performs a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory duties on an assigned shift. The Battalion Chief is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and implementing the activities of all personnel assigned to duty on 24-hour battalions, under all types of emergency and non-emergency situations, management of personnel, clerical, inspection, and communication duties.

The Battalion Chief works a 24 hour shift and is expected to not only direct staff but under the presence of the Deputy Chief, performs fire suppression tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervises all line personnel in all fire stations on shift. Through company officers, enforces all department rules and regulations. Supervises preparation of records and reports. Investigate personnel matters and recommend corrective or disciplinary actions. Evaluate personnel performance, including recruit evaluations.
  • Respond to fire incidents to save and protect life and property under emergency conditions. Operate hand and/or specialized power equipment and apparatus to suppress various types of fires under diverse conditions. Exercise police powers in responding to emergency situations. Operate fire vehicles/apparatus as assigned. Participate in related salvage activities.
  • Acts as fire ground commander on all routine and emergency operations as directed, assuring that they are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assists Fire Prevention Bureau in the determination of origin and cause of fires and preservation of scene evidence.
  • Drive and operate firefighting vehicles and equipment.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the department to establish and maintain a safe and harmonious work environment that ensures a high degree of operational readiness at all times that maximizes the level of service provided to the community.
  • Ensures that all companies comply with training schedules. Develops training programs, including post-incident analyses, schedules, and deliveries, and coordinates training to line personnel in conjunction with the training division.
  • As necessary, initiate the National Incident Management System and/or incident command system and serve as the “Incident Commander” when scheduled or in the absence of the Fire Chief or other higher-ranking officer.
  • Prepares and submits written reports as directed. Makes recommendations regarding the department budget. Assists company officers in pre-fire planning. Represents the fire department at public functions and meetings as directed. Attends staff functions.
  • Collect information and complete necessary reports concerning fire department operations and complete related administrative tasks.
  • Assist and/or lead the development of policies, procedures, and standards in order to enhance the overall operations and functions of the fire department and assigned program area(s) of responsibilities.
  • Develop systems and approaches to define and meet community fire service needs.
  • Assist with long‑range planning efforts and develop pre‑incident emergency response plans for facilities within the City of Fitchburg that have been determined to be a target hazard or pose a life‑safety hazard.
