Assistant Director - Finance () – Coconino County Sheriff's Office (Patrol)

Assistant Director of Finance leads the department’s finance functions, representing the County in public appearances and ensuring fiscal integrity of official accounting records. Under general direction, performs professional accounting, administrative, and analytical work in managing the County’s accounting records.

• Assists the Director in developing and administering all finance functions including budgeting, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, financial reporting, and auditing activities.
• Acts as Finance Director in the Director’s absence, representing the department publicly.
• Preserves fiscal integrity of County accounting records through accuracy, timeliness and adherence to accounting/auditing standards.
• Develops systems and procedures to monitor general ledger activity.
• Oversees annual budget development and implementation.
• Leads implementation of annual user fee reviews and periodic user fee study activities.
• Oversees cost allocation plan development and implementation.
• Ensures financial system operational functionality and compliance with ERP policies.
• Provides monthly and year‑end financial reports to departments and management.
• Reviews and analyzes account balances for accuracy and reasonableness.
• Recommends policy changes and training for department financial stakeholders.
• Supervises payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing staff and processes.
• Advises on IRS and retirement system rules and compliance.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and at least four years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including one year of supervisory experience; OR
• Associate degree in accounting or related field with five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including one year of supervisory experience; OR
• Any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

• CPA strongly preferred.

• Considerable knowledge of governmental accounting, grant financial management, internal controls, and applicable laws.
• Working knowledge of public administration principles, automated data management, government purchasing, payroll, accounts payable, budgeting, and cost accounting.
• Skill in designing technology for financial management, building positive relationships with stakeholders, and proficiency with spreadsheets and financial software.
• Ability to plan, organize, supervise staff, meet financial deadlines, analyze data, develop policies, and communicate effectively.
