Join Coconino County Arizona as an Environmental Health Specialist for the Health and Human Services division. Positions available at levels I, II, and III.
Position SummaryEnvironmental Health Specialists provide licensing and inspection services to approximately 2000 businesses and facilities throughout Coconino County, including food establishments, hotels/motels, pools and spas, schools, children’s camps, trailer parks, body art establishments, and special events. The role also addresses public nuisance complaints and conducts vector surveillance. Significant travel within the county is required.
Nature of WorkUnder general supervision, perform work of moderate difficulty in the environmental health field. Responsibilities include inspections, investigations, enforcement, and collaboration with related agencies.
Typical Duties Environmental Health Specialist I (Technician)- Learn the responsibilities of the Environmental Health Specialist II position.
- Work closely with a Specialist II or III in fieldwork, paperwork, and follow‑up.
- Receive mentorship to gain a broad perspective of the role.
- Perform all duties of Specialist I.
- Inspect facilities to ensure compliance with legal codes.
- Identify and document violations.
- Conduct public health nuisance investigations, resolve complaints, and recommend enforcement actions.
- Assist in epidemiological investigations.
- Coordinate inspection activities with related agencies.
- Review simple plans for compliance.
- Enter data into the permit tracking system.
- Implement routine enforcement measures.
- Assist with vector control and zoonotic disease surveillance.
- Prepare and maintain records.
- Provide training to Specialists I.
- Develop expertise in specialized tasks such as special events, body art, plan reviews, vector activities, HACCP plans, enforcement, and marijuana regulations.
- Perform all duties of Specialists I and II.
- Lead epidemiological investigations and resolve complaints.
- Assist in training staff.
- Inspect a wide range of entities for compliance.
- Identify and document violations and secure compliance.
- Conduct investigations under the epidemiologist’s direction.
- Review moderate to complex plans and decide approval or denial.
- Enter data into the permit tracking system.
- Implement routine enforcement measures.
- Coordinate specialized programs.
- Assist with grant deliverables.
- Assist all staff with closures and difficult establishments as needed.
- Develop and deliver training programs.
- Maintain records and reports.
- Drive significant amounts of time.
- Work independently and collaboratively.
- Operate effectively with interruptions.
- Maintain vision acuity.
- Use hearing and speech for ordinary conversation.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, environmental science, or a closely related field.
- Obtain and maintain an Arizona driver’s license by hire date.
- Maintain a satisfactory 5‑year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
- Hold a Registered Sanitarian certification, State Pest Control Commission license, or National Swimming Pool Foundation Pool/Spa Operator certification within one year of employment.
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in an environmental health program.
- Current Registered Sanitarian certification.
- State Pest Control Commission license and Pool/Spa Operator certification or willingness to obtain within the first year.
- Bachelor’s degree, three years of experience, or equivalent postgraduate education that demonstrates ability to perform duties.
- Current Registered Sanitarian certification.
- State Pest Control Commission license and Pool/Spa Operator certification; standardized by the Food & Drug Administration if available.
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Federal, state, and county codes, laws, and regulations.
- Field inspection, compliance monitoring, and enforcement practices.
