Engineering Analyst II/ Field Construction Representative – Gas Utility Projects
Contract Duration: Contract through 12/11/2026 (High potential for extension)
Location: Based near Flint / Holly / Groveland, MI (within ~1-hour commute)
Work Schedule: 4/10 (Mon–Thurs) | OT on Fridays/Saturdays when needed
About the Role:
We are seeking a Field Construction Representative to support real-time gas utility construction projects in the Eastern Michigan region, spanning Groveland, Clyde, and extending east to Lake Huron.
You’ll work closely with gas construction crews to capture GPS data of newly installed and existing underground gas facilities. This role combines field inspection, construction understanding, and GPS technology to ensure precise as-built documentation that helps reduce future asset damage and supports safe operations.
Department Context – Distribution Engineering Services:
This team operates under the Construction Organization and plays a critical role in advancing the company’s capability to integrate GPS technologies into utility operations. While this role doesn’t require prior GPS system expertise, it is a hands-on field role that contributes directly to laying the technical foundation for GPS-driven infrastructure tracking.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work on active construction sites with gas utility crews
- Use GPS antennas and related technology to capture geospatial data of:
- Newly installed gas facilities (e.g., pipes, valves, fittings)
- Existing infrastructure already in the ground
- Accurately collect and document GPS coordinates for input into GIS and utility records
- Enter excavation areas, climb ladders, and navigate job site conditions safely to gather field data
- Provide continuous real-time updates of installed assets
- Support operating teams by “speaking their language” and aligning with field workflows
- Anticipate field conditions and proactively coordinate with crew leads
- Support project documentation, reporting, and compliance with utility standards
- Collaborate closely with engineering, field ops, and GIS data teams
- OSHA 10 Certification (mandatory or must be obtained before onboarding)
- Experience working on or around gas utility or construction crews
- Basic knowledge of municipal infrastructure, underground utility layouts, or civil construction
- Ability to understand and interpret construction activity (e.g., where pipes are being laid, how assets are placed)
- Stake-out / locate experience is a strong plus
- Physically able to work in excavation areas, climb ladders, and carry field equipment
- Familiarity with GPS-based data capture tools is a plus (training will be provided if not)
- This is a 100% field-based role; no remote work
- Must be able to commute daily to various job sites across the assigned region
- Must be within 1-hour commuting distance to project sites across Eastern Michigan / Lake Huron
- Must own a reliable personal vehicle
- Mileage for project travel is reimbursed
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends when required by construction schedules
- This role supports real-time construction – you'll be out in the field as things are being built
- Your work will directly support damage prevention by ensuring underground assets are precisely mapped
- Ability to blend with construction and ops teams is crucial – we’re looking for someone who can “speak the field’s language,” not just observe from the sidelines
- Prior experience with GPS utility mapping, as-builting, or gas distribution is a plus but not mandatory
