Position Summary Information

Position Summary
Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications.

In addition, faculty have the following key responsibilities which include:

Faculty member will be responsible for teaching classes in general and/or inorganic chemistry in both lecture and laboratory settings, adhering to the stated course objectives, content and delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Teach general and/or inorganic chemistry in lecture and laboratory settings.
  • Adhere to course objectives, content, and delivery as defined for the assignment.
Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry (MA, MS or MAT), or PhD or EdD in Chemistry, or an advanced related degree with at least 18 semester hours of identifiable coursework in chemistry related to the teaching assignment. (

    Note:

    These courses could also an application of the chemistry content in a related field of study.)
  • Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
  • Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Reasoning Ability:
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Technology

    Skills:

    Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.
  • Other

    Skills and Abilities:

    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and college objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with students, peers, staff, and administrators; skill in oral and written communication.
  • A foreign degree must be certified, at the candidate’s expense, by a professional evaluation service.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
  • Academic experience which includes work, research, study or teaching in chemistry.
  • Additional graduate level coursework or master’s degrees or higher in additional disciplines within the study of Chemistry
  • Recent, within the last three years, successful teaching of Chemistry in the lecture and/or laboratory setting. (Lecture or lab experience will influence assignment.)
  • Recent community college/college teaching experience in inorganic chemistry.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with computer-based instruction, learning technologies, competency-based instruction and modularized courseware or other alternate delivery methodologies
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in chemistry and/or the teaching of chemistry
  • Recent, within the last 8 years, experience using chemistry instruments
  • Has training in and experience with safety rules in chemistry
