Education/Experience Requirements

  • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Michigan Board of Nursing obtained within 60 days of hire date or job transfer date required.
  • Certified BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association obtained within 90 days of hire date or job transfer date required, or Certified Instructor.
  • Education:

    graduate of an approved professional (RN) nursing program.

General Summary
  • Use independent professional judgment, analytical skills, and the nursing process to provide a full range of delegated, interdependent, and independent nursing services to patients.
  • Within the Seven Dimensions of Patient Care and Benner's Domains of Nursing Practice, demonstrate clinical competence, compassion and customer service orientation, focus on process and outcomes, and cost-consciousness when assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care provided to patients.
  • Coordinate development of a multi-disciplinary plan of care in accordance with Nursing Problem Care Sets and/or clinical practice guidelines, age-specific requirements and regulatory requirements to ensure appropriate length of stay, use of resources, and achievement of quality outcomes.
  • Provide patient care respecting patient rights, dignity, values, culture, preferences, and expressed needs. Assess patient/family information needs, plan and deliver patient teaching, and evaluate effectiveness of educational interventions. Involve patient, family, and significant others in plan of care.
  • Collaborate with patient/family, hospital staff, and community agencies to develop discharge plans that prepare patients for continued care needs.
  • Complete assessments for risk factors (e.g., falls, skin breakdown, VTE, aspiration) and initiate appropriate interventions. Complete medication reconciliation on admission and when the level of care changes. Establish, direct, coordinate and document the plan of nursing care with patient/family.
  • Initiate problems and outcomes list (plan-of-care) based on medical diagnosis and patient needs. Monitor, document, and report patient response to interventions and progress toward outcomes.
  • Document nursing interventions (NIC) and progress toward outcomes (NOC); provide patient education and evaluate its effectiveness. Work with Case Manager to ensure appropriate referrals prior to discharge. Review discharge plans/instructions with patient prior to discharge and ensure follow-up arrangements.
  • Ensure that core discharge instructions are provided to all applicable patients.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in basic nursing procedures (e.g., dressing changes, catheterization, NG tube insertion, suctioning) and administer medications/IVs/blood products per policies. Prepare patients for surgery or invasive procedures as required and perform or assist with procedures according to standards of care and nursing practice.
  • Utilize equipment per manufacturer instructions and established nursing procedures; operate and troubleshoot IV pumps, PCA pumps, epidural pumps, feeding pumps, patient beds, and related devices as applicable.
  • Monitor patient responses, regular chart reviews, and communication with physicians to ensure treatment plans are progressed appropriately. Monitor vital signs, labs, input/output, and blood glucose; recognize and respond to meaningful changes.
  • Assess and manage pain, provide education on treatment plans, safety measures, medications, and self-care; assist with relief measures and communicate with the patient and family throughout care.
  • Respond to life-threatening emergencies with CPR, notify appropriate teams, perform emergency equipment checks, and provide family support as needed.
  • Ensure confidentiality, maintain a respectful and safe environment, and promote cost-effective resource use. Participate in quality improvement, teaching/mentoring of student nurses, and unit/department goals.
  • Provide direction and leadership to other staff, communicate expectations, and collaborate to maintain a healthy work environment. Adapt to changes in workload, census, and staffing levels.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills essential for interaction with patients, families, nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital personnel. Prioritize professional nursing care and safety at all times.
  • Orientation: on-the-job training with expected final proficiency as per unit policies.
