Application Tips

Perform routine animal control and law enforcement activities to safeguard citizens from dangerous and nuisance animals and enforce state and county laws for the Animal Control Department within scope of authority and training under basic supervision.

Typical Classification Essential Duties (Responsibilities)
  • Respond to calls for service from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and capture, contain, and impound animals.
  • Patrol assigned area and enforce County and state animal control regulations.
  • Assist in investigating animal cruelty, neglect, excessive noise, bite allegations, and nuisance complaints; write reports and issue citations and warnings.
  • Contact individuals to discuss violations and alternatives for compliance, conduct follow‑up inspections, and verify compliance.
  • Assist in investigating domestic and wildlife animal control issues, dispose of dead animals, seize and relocate wild animals as allowed by law.
  • Learn to euthanize sick, injured, unclaimed, and owner‑surrendered animals in the field and at the animal shelter.
  • Transport animals to shelter, assist with animal care, and maintain shelter equipment.
  • Maintain activity logs and records, prepare technical documents for hearings and prosecutions.
  • Provide animal‑related information to the public, respond to questions about rabies and zoonotic disease control, assist in setting up vaccination and animal license clinics.
  • Work with other state and regional law enforcement agencies on wildlife and livestock incidents.
  • Contribute to the unit’s service efficiency by offering suggestions and participating as an active team member.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues and customer records.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements To Perform Work
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One year of experience working with/handling animals.
  • Arizona residents must have a valid Arizona Driver’s License upon hire; new residents must obtain one within 30 days.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
