Paralegal

Job Description

The Paralegal is responsible for performing a variety of functions including case, statutory and common law, and judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.

• Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits a variety of documents.
• Prepares legal files and subpoenas for Solicitors.
• Obtains criminal histories, reports, statements, photos, and videos from law enforcement agencies.
• Enters all information, documents, photos, and videos into case management system.
• Schedules evaluations with South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) and Department of Mental Health (DMH) for defendants.
• Prepares reports from evaluations.
• Files and tracks restraining orders.
• Organizes supporting documents, exhibits, and evidence.
• Performs research according to office policy and precedent.
• Interacts, communicates and provides assistance to various individuals and groups including immediate supervisor, co-workers, Assistant Solicitors, Victims, Public Defenders, other County employees, Law Enforcement Agencies, and defense attorneys.

• May assist new employees in operation of Case Management system, indictment preparation, Rule 5 Response as well as everyday operations.
• Performs all other related duties as required.

• Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies required.
• Must have general knowledge of state, county, and/or local governments with specific knowledge of General Sessions, Common Pleas Court and Family Court.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.
• Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 10 lb. objects regularly.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must have the ability to travel up to 5%.
