CACI is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Analyst to join our photonics team – we are expanding! Our laser communications technology is helping NASA provide high‑definition video from the International Space Station, and to explore asteroids 250 million miles away. Our other optical technology can also help scientists discover biohazards; support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and protect soldiers from explosive devices.

Do you have a passion for innovation? Apply now and join the team!

The Opportunity
  • Under limited direction design the packaging for complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements for R&D and production programs for U.S. government customers.
  • Develop, run, and validate finite element analysis (FEA) models using ANSYS Mechanical and related simulation tools.
  • Perform and interpret static, thermal, modal, random vibration, shock, and thermal distortion analyses aligned with spacecraft environmental requirements.
  • Interpret simulation results and provide actionable recommendations to design, manufacturing, and project teams.
  • Support optical performance sensitivity studies, linking mechanical deformation and thermal gradients to impacts on optical alignment and wavefront error.
  • Collaborate with hardware designers to jointly optimize circuit card layout with special attention to thermal performance and mitigation.
  • Produce build‑to drawings and data packages and collaborate with and manage 3rd party vendors to resolve specification, performance, and reliability issues and realize the commercial and custom‑machined parts necessary to build the subsystem.
  • May lead a team of other designers, analysts, and engineering professionals.
Qualifications

Required:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.
  • Proficient use of computer‑aided design and analysis software, with Solid Works strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience conducting mechanical simulations using ANSYS Mechanical (static, modal, thermal, nonlinear, or dynamic).
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, including mechanics of materials, heat transfer, vibration, and structural dynamics.
  • Experience in the design of complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) methodologies, with experience applying these principles to improve product quality and manufacturability.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Desired:

  • Experience working with optomechanical systems, precision structures, or high‑stability mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with gimbal systems or other precision motion control mechanisms, including design, integration, and optimization for applications in optical systems or robotics.
  • Familiarity with material behavior in space environments, such as CTE matching, thermal gradients, and outgassing considerations.
  • Experience in environmental testing to MIL‑STD or equivalent industrial test levels, including shock, vibration, thermal, and EMI/EMC.
  • Experience in optical and electronic subassembly layout including board physical design, chassis or enclosure design, optical fiber routing, and electrical and optical connector selection.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
