The Outdoors Group School is an Independent Special School that is based solely outside in a woodland setting for learners with SEMH and ASD needs. We believe in developing the whole learner, not just their academic ability. We use a project-based method, allowing the learner to be completely autonomous, whilst contributing to a well-rounded education based on skills for lifelong learning and personal development.
The school caters for KS2, KS3 and KS4 learners and aims to provide a space for learners to develop skill sets and a growth mindset that they have been unable to in previous settings. We work closely with learners’ support networks, both professional and familial and try to create a holistic and engaging place for learners to grow.
The Outdoors School opened in September 2019 and due to its successes, we are increasing learner numbers, therefore looking for more people to join our team.
We are seeking a Cover Tutor primarily based in South Brent, with flexibility to work across other school sites including Shillingford, Tiverton, and Crediton as needed. The Cover Tutor will help to deliver learner-centered lessons, differentiating instruction to meet the individual needs of students. This role involves covering for staff members across various roles within the school.

Summary Objective- You will be required to operate in the role of the person you have been set to cover, in our South Brent site.
- You will support the needs for your assigned tutor group of learners, provide crisis management and needs based support for assigned learners, and be support for other staff requiring support.
- You will support staff by helping with behaviour strategy recording and review. You will work with either individuals or small groups all of which will have varying levels of need within ASD and SEMH.

The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those covered by The Outdoors School policies and procedures. They may be modified by the Executive Headteacher, with your agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title.
To take responsibility for groups of learners in the short-term absence of their usual staff. In this context, the Cover Support will be responsible for:
- Supporting work that has been set in accordance with school policy.
- Liaising with staff about work set for a group.
- Managing the behaviour of learners to ensure a constructive environment whilst undertaking work.
- Responding to any questions from learners about process and procedure.
- Dealing with any immediate problems or emergencies in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures.
- Reporting back, as appropriate, using the school’s agreed referral procedures, on the behaviour of learners during the day, and any other issues arising.
- To support the work of one or more curriculum areas.
- To accompany learners on trips, visits, and other educational activities.
- To act as a First Aider, for which training will be provided.
- Ensure opportunities to meet EHCP targets.
- Follow Parent Contact protocols.
- Ability to be flexible to the learning environment.
- Able to implement a reflective or restorative process with individual learners.
- Building rapport and understanding with individual learners.
- Proactive work spotting the signs and trends of an individual’s behaviour.
- Engage in staff supervision and appraisal process.
- Engage in critical reflective practice and participate in CPD opportunities, developing and sharing ideas and best practice for training and delivery including personal development.
- Work within the TOS charter.
- Complete the OAK induction process.
- Engage with the whole company community.
- Ensure that learners always experience a supportive and positive staff team.
