Other Information

In the Department of Art Education, we strive to empower minds and transform lives. Our mission is to prepare exceptional leaders in the fields of arts administration, art education, art therapy, and museum education & visitor centered curation. We do this by providing theoretical and methodological foundations, in addition to hands-on experiences, that will nurture the next generation of practitioners and scholars.

Graduates of our programs are exceptional stewards of their respective fields, carrying on traditions and introducing innovation.

The graduate art therapy program offers degrees in Master of Science in Art Therapy as well as the Doctor of Philosophy in Art Education, Art Therapy Research and Practice major. The Masters-level program emphasizes a thorough theoretical foundation of art therapy practice and research as well as practicum and internship experiences working within community and clinical settings. The program integrates research-informed practices to foster graduates who understand and apply the power of the visual arts and therapeutic relationships to promote personal and community wellness.

The Art Therapy Master’s Program, beginning in the 1980s, is a three-year, two-summer program. It was initially approved by the American Art Therapy Association in 2004 and became accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in January 2019. It is the only graduate level art therapy program in the state of Florida, and the only one housed in a state university in the Southeast region.

The master’s art therapy program has a highly competitive acceptance rate and attracts students from all over the world.

The program emphasizes a strong theoretical foundation in art therapy, supported by practicum and internship experiences in education, correctional, community and clinical settings. Students are prepared as practitioners who integrate research-informed approaches and use the power of the visual arts and therapeutic relationships to promote individual and community wellness.
