Maclay School seeks an engaging, student‑centered educator to teach 9th Grade Geography. The ideal candidate is both academically rigorous and deeply relational, and someone who believes students rise to high expectations when they feel supported, known, and inspired to stretch.
Who You Are:
You are a teacher who believes students learn best in a classroom where they feel supported and challenged in equal measure. You design lessons that push students to think deeply, ask questions, and connect content to the wider world. You enjoy finding the right balance of guidance and independence: helping 9th graders develop the skills, confidence, and ownership they need to thrive in upper school.
You believe great teaching is both collaborative and iterative, and you’re energized by opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow with a team. Above all, you find deep fulfillment in inspiring curiosity, global awareness, and a genuine love of learning.
- Full‑time instructor for 9th Grade Geography
- Design learning experiences that foster critical thinking, inquiry, and deep engagement with geographic concepts, global patterns, human‑environment interactions, and contemporary world issues
- Create and maintain a classroom community that is warm, encouraging, and structured, where students feel safe to take risks and are also pushed to grow academically
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning profiles and adapt course design as class needs change from year to year
- Build systems that help students develop autonomy, ownership, and responsibility for their learning, including opportunities for choice and self‑direction
- Integrate culturally responsive practices, global perspectives, and real‑world case studies that deepen students’ understanding of human geography
- Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across grade levels to ensure curricular alignment and mission‑aligned instruction
- Build positive relationships with families through clear, timely communication that supports student growth and strengthens the school–home partnership
- Engage fully in the life of the school by advising students, participating in campus activities, and supporting Maclay’s commitment to whole‑child education
- Contribute to a vibrant school culture by attending select after‑school events that support community connection and student relationships
- Perform additional responsibilities that support the school’s mission and daily functioning as needed
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Geography, Social Sciences, Education, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred
- Prior experience teaching high school history or human geography preferred; AP experience strongly valued
- Demonstrated skill in fostering student inquiry, analysis, and discourse
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning, reflection, and continuous improvement
- Ability to build positive relationships with students while holding them to high academic and personal standards
- Cultural competency and a genuine interest in learning about the world and integrating diverse perspectives into classroom practice
