Playgroups for young children and their parents take place throughout the year - fall, winter, spring, and summer. Playgroups meet on a weekly basis for approximately 10 weeks each season. Each Playgroup lasts for one hour and is co-led by an Early Intervention Specialist and a Lowell Public School Early Childhood staff member. Playgroups are offered in English, Spanish, Khmer, and Arabic.
We encourage families to pick one day and location to build a sense of community and help your child build friendships. Regular attendance assists your child in understanding and following playgroup routines (song, activities, and snack) while helping your child establish relationships with consistent adult leaders.
We recognize that not all families are able to attend regularly or may want to attend an additional weekly Playgroup session. “Drop-in Sessions” offered at the Pollard Library on Mondays at 11:00 throughout the school year are available to meet these needs and provide similar opportunities for young children and parents.
Lowell Public Schools, in collaboration with other community partners, offers Playgroups to parents and children in Lowell, providing an opportunity for both adults and their children to meet new friends while engaging in learning activities such as reading books, singing songs, painting, and manipulatives such as beading and playdough. Each week, parents and their children are greeted by consistent staff and given an opportunity to choose a play activity and enjoy a quick snack with friends.
Parenting tips are provided to each family to promote social skills, language, and learning at home.
All playgroups are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care through the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant. As part of this funding, Lowell Public Schools formed Lowell's Early Childhood Council. The Council meets the first Monday of each month from September to June. We invite all community agencies serving children from birth through age eight, families, and early care and education providers to participate in the Council.
