Founding Manufacturing Engineer — Precision Machining & Metrology
Syntrex Advanced Systems is an early-stage advanced-manufacturing company building a new physical manufacturing platform for high-value precision parts.
We’ve spent the last several months defining the architecture, technical requirements, measurement strategy, and first physical proof. We are now moving from analysis into execution: selecting a host machine shop, finalizing the test procedure and metrology chain, and preparing to run our first independently measured manufacturing experiment.
We are looking for the person who can help turn that work into something real on the shop floor.
This is not a generic manufacturing-engineering role. We are looking for someone with deep hands-on experience in precision CNC machining, work holding, probing, dimensional metrology, and process troubleshooting, someone who understands what actually happens between the drawing, the machine, the fixture, the operator, and the CMM.
You would be the first dedicated manufacturing-engineering practitioner at Syntrex and would work closely with the Founder & CEO and our technical leadership.
What you’ll work on- Translate our first proof-of-concept requirements into a clear, executable shop-floor test procedure.
- Help design the specimens, datum strategy, work holding, and fixture approach for a multi-operation machining sequence.
- Develop the technical content required for machine-shop RFQs/RFPs and evaluate candidate shops and equipment.
- Work directly with host shops to understand machine capability, controls, probing, tooling, setup strategy, and practical execution constraints.
- Help establish the independent dimensional-metrology chain used to evaluate the experiment.
- Define practical part-temperature sensing, cleaning, probing, and process-control procedures that work in a real machining environment.
- Analyze part routings and manufacturing processes to identify where setups, inspection, re-establishment of reference, and other non-cutting work create cost and delay.
- Participate on-site during physical testing and troubleshoot the issues that inevitably appear when analysis meets real hardware.
- Help turn experimental results and shop-floor observations into better engineering decisions for the next generation of the platform.
You should have substantial real-world experience in precision machining or manufacturing engineering and be comfortable working directly around CNC equipment.
Strong candidates will have experience with several of the following:
- Multi-axis CNC machining, including 5-axis, mill-turn, or horizontal machining centers.
- CNC controls such as FANUC, Siemens, Heidenhain, Okuma, Mazatrol, or Haas.
- On-machine probing, work-offset establishment, probe calibration, and production measurement.
- Fixture and work holding design for multi-operation precision parts.
- GD&T and datum-reference strategy.
- CMM inspection and dimensional metrology.
- Measurement uncertainty, gauge R&R, calibration, or accredited measurement environments.
- Diagnosing process drift caused by thermal effects, tooling, fixturing, machine behavior, material, or setup.
- CAM and realistic process/cycle-time planning.
- Aerospace, defense, semiconductor-equipment, medical-device, or other high-value precision manufacturing.
- Writing work instructions or procedures that machinists and technicians can execute without ambiguity.
We care much more about demonstrated capability than credentials. A graduate degree is not required. Someone who came up through machining and later moved into engineering may be an exceptional fit.
What success looks likeIn the first several months, we expect this person to help us move from a fully defined proof architecture to a real physical test:
