The City of Alvarado is actively recruiting for the position of Full-Time Police Officer and is now offering up to $12K SIGN-ON BONUS
.
- Certified w/3yrs+ experience in a city comparable or greater in size to Alvarado - $12,000*
- Certified w/less than 3 years - $6,000*
- Non-Certified - $3,000 (Plus Peace Officer Academy fully paid for)
- Vacation - 40 hours upon completion of Field Training
- Holiday - Remaining City holidays upon hire
Respond to citizen calls for service, enforce criminal and traffic laws, and reduce crime and fear of crime within the City of Alvarado.
Examples of Work to be Performed- Pro-active enforcement of all applicable criminal and traffic laws, including the issuance of citations.
- Respond to calls for service from citizens.
- Maintain high-visibility patrols.
- Educate public and citizen contacts.
- Prepare and complete all necessary reports and supplements.
- Attend state mandated and supplemental training each year.
- Testify in court when required.
- Preserve and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Alvarado, Texas.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Perform other duties as required.
- MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ANY SHIFT INCLUDING DAYS, EVENINGS AND DEEP NIGHTS. (Shifts are typically twelve (12) hours with actual hours being established by operational necessity) MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ALL DAYS OF THE WEEK AND HOLIDAYS.
- MUST BE ABLE TO WORK PAST NORMAL ASSIGNED SHIFT.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by the incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.
Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read, comprehend and abide by the Police Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Ability to comprehend modern principles, practices, and procedures of police work.
- Ability to comprehend pertinent state laws and city ordinances, and ability to diagnose violations.
- Ability to recall geography of the city.
- Ability to deal courteously, but firmly when required with the general public, and give oral commands.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to render accurate oral and written reports of accidents, incidents, and violations of the law.
- Ability to attend and benefit from special training courses as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a TCOLE Peace Officer’s License.
- Must be a US citizen as evidenced by birth certificate, passport or legal immigration documentation.
- Must be able to speak, read and write the English language.
- Must be able to pass a written exam (requires a passing score of 70%).
- Must be able to pass a physical exam (consists of a 2000-meter row, with no time limit).
- Must have an acceptable criminal history according to the standards set by TCOLE.
- Must not be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle and possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
- Must not be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
- If applicable, an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the U.S. as evidenced by the appropriate DD214 or applicable documentation.
- Must pass a polygraph exam, in depth background investigation, a physical exam / drug screening as well as a psychological assessment prior to hiring.
Special Requirements
- All employees of this classification in addition are required to meet necessary performance standards on an ongoing basis with regards to any test which may be required as part of department policy regarding agility, satisfactory operation of a firearm or vehicle or other equipment.
