Position Overview and Responsibilities

Compliance with Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. The Park Ranger operates within the Florida State Parks system, providing visitor services, resource management, maintenance, administration, and protection of park assets. The incumbent must abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct and all applicable policies, procedures, and directives.

  • Visitor Services (25%) – Explain facilities and services, meet visitors, answer questions, provide information and directions, resolve complaints, and deliver interpretive programs.
  • Resource Management (25%) – Protect natural, cultural, historic, and archaeological resources; remove exotic species, conduct prescribed fire, restore plant communities, participate in vegetation/wildlife plans, and maintain data records.
  • Maintenance (30%) – Construct, clean, maintain, and repair park grounds, facilities, and equipment; conduct routine inspections and ensure maintenance standards.
  • Administration (10%) – Prepare forms and reports, answer phones, operate radio and office equipment, perform purchasing and fiscal duties, collect fees, reconcile receipts, and maintain park files.
  • Protection (5%) – Patrol facilities, enforce rules, maintain visitor safety, open/secure facilities, and support the Park Protection Plan.
  • Other related duties as required (5%)
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge in
  • Natural resource management
  • General methods and techniques for repairing and maintaining park facilities, sites, equipment, and grounds
  • Basic math computations
Skills in
  • Using hand and power tools and equipment
  • Maintenance of facilities and grounds
  • Operation and use of various vehicles and heavy equipment including tractors and bulldozers
Ability to
  • Conduct inspections and maintain park facilities, equipment, and grounds
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Identify and investigate problems
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with others
  • Perform physical labor with power/gas tools and equipment
  • Accurately prepare reports
  • Collect fees and operate cash registers
  • Understand and apply rules and regulations
  • Provide visitor assistance services
  • Conduct interpretive programs
  • Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Successfully complete ranger academy
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Successfully complete background and fingerprint check
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Position of Special Trust – successful background screening required
