Job Description
Chronicle Heritage is currently seeking an Associate Archaeologist to primarily provide support to our Tallahassee, FL office, but may also work with other offices throughout the Southeast region. The candidate will need to work independently or as part of a team of professionals.
Hire Type On‑Call, Project Based
Schedule Monday‑Friday, standard business hours; occasional weekend work depending on projects
Location Tallahassee, FL
Responsibilities- Lead crews on archaeological survey, testing, and data recovery projects
- Prepare sections or entire reports and assist with general project management and laboratory duties
- Travel for projects, including overnight stays
- Assist with other field or project management duties as assigned
- Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field
- 1+ years of experience supervising archaeological fieldwork
- Ability to walk several miles daily over all terrain types and excavate in various conditions
- Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standard, Code of Federal Regulations 36 CFF Part 61 for Archaeology
- Valid driver’s license
- Registered Professional Archaeologist
- Familiarity with the cultural history of the Southeast region and knowledge of state and federal cultural resource regulations
- Strong writing skills
- Experience preparing technical reports
- Highly organized and able to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers
- Previous experience with mapping equipment and other special application equipment (e.g., total station, GPS, tablets)
- Positive and energetic attitude
- Regular fieldwork or on‑site inspections requiring frequent travel/drive, use of maps or GPS, and physical mobility on rough terrain
- Ability to walk or hike 10+ miles per day on rugged terrain; ability to climb, crouch, kneel, and balance as needed
- Exposure to weather conditions and natural hazards; possible use of respiratory or protective equipment
- Ability to carry loads up to 25 pounds and work around heavy construction equipment
- Strong vision required for observation, documentation, and translate scientific data into written records
- Mental ability to organize work, analyze data, and interact professionally in one’s own and others’ efforts
- Standard office tasks such as computer usage and operating office equipment may also be required
