Position Overview and Responsibilities

This Environmental Specialist III position is part of the Florida Geological Survey’s Geologic Sample Acquisition and Management (GSAM) section involved in the FGS’s Florida Geological Survey Mapping Initiative (FGSMI). Fieldwork will be a major component of this position’s duties including conducting fieldwork, recording observations, sampling outcrops and exposures, collecting core samples, geophysical data collection, and borehole geophysical log processing. You will use the knowledge gained through fieldwork, examination of geologic samples, and geophysical data interpretation to complete new geologic maps.

Most importantly, the work that this position will be involved with will help the FGS construct a better geologic understanding of the state of Florida as well as similar geologic environments in our natural world.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and techniques of geological research and mapping. Knowledge of procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis. Knowledge of Florida’s lithostratigraphy. Skilled in the methods of geological data collection. Skilled in organizing work details and prioritizing workload. Skilled in the use of the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe, and GIS software. Ability to learn field operation of borehole geophysical system and data processing software.

Ability to learn new software including but not limited to WellCAD, Neuralog, and GEODES. Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain laboratory documentation data, use lab equipment and materials, and perform laboratory tests and analyses. Ability to travel and work asymmetric work week (8/6).

Ability to properly handle and box core samples. Ability to lift core boxes and drilling materials weighing 50 pounds or more. Ability to operate or learn to operate a direct-push drill rig. Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least four years of verifiable related experience in Geology. Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university may be used as an alternative for the required four years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • This is a medically monitored position.
Position of Special Trust Requirement

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP-422 (Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility). Any applicant being considered for employment must successfully complete a Level 2 State and National criminal history check as a condition of employment before beginning employment, and also be screened in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, F.S. No applicant may begin employment until the background screening results are received, reviewed for any disqualifying offenses, and approved by the Agency.
