General DescriptionThe “Steel Erection Foreman/leadman” provides site leadership and is responsible for, among other duties: scheduling, manpower and equipment planning, coordinating, supervising, assisting in cost control, ensuring safety and loss prevention measures are adhered to, providing proper training, and ensuring productivity of crews that install/assemble steel components of the structure. As a key participant in the relationship with the contractor, other contractors, company and client, the general foreman is the second management level and also serves as a coordinating manager and client interface.
ReportingThis position reports directly to the “Steel Erection Superintendent” and to the “Project Manager” assigned to the particular project for project‑related issues.
Tasks, Abilities and Skills- Read specifications and blueprints to determine locations, quantities and sizes of materials required.
- Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members using plumb bobs, lasers, transits and/or levels.
- Connect columns, beams and girders with bolts following blueprints and supervisor instructions.
- Hoist steel members into place using cranes or other equipment with proper signaling.
- Bolt aligned structural steel members for permanent riveting, bolting or welding.
- Field‑assemble parts such as steel frames, columns, beams and girders according to blueprints.
- Push, pull or pry structural steel members into approximate positions for final attachment.
- Cut, bend and weld steel pieces using metal shears, torches and welding equipment.
- Safely operate and maintain equipment (material lifts, welding machines, torches, saws, grinders, hoists, etc.).
- Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in steel construction.
- Knowledge of safety, quality and cost‑control standards and procedures.
- Understanding of machines and tools, including design, use, repair and maintenance.
- Proper rigging and signaling knowledge.
- Speak and understand English in oral and written form.
- Assess job priorities and assign employees to appropriate job sites.
- Ensure employees have tools and equipment needed for job output.
- Oversee work to ensure smooth operation and adherence to plan.
- Maintain and update safety kits for emergencies.
- Communicate crew performance to supervisor.
- Assist in training new employees.
- Give clear directions to avoid repetitive mistakes.
- Enforce company rules.
- Complete jobs on time and within budget.
- Identify quickest and easiest ways to perform tasks without sacrificing quality.
- Hold documented site safety meetings weekly.
- Complete a 3‑week look‑ahead schedule weekly.
- Attend all on‑site project meetings (safety, quality, scheduling, production, etc.).
- Issue corrective action notices when required within authority.
- Conduct Quality Control inspections as outlined in the QC Inspector job description.

- Knowledge of transit, laser lever, torpedo, torque guns, welders, gas supplied equipment, rigging and components.
The “Steel Erection Foreman/Leadman” must maintain a current and valid driver’s license as travel to various projects is part of the role. Most travel is day travel, but some jobs may require staying out of town. The position requires a normal 40‑hour work week, and may demand additional overtime, Saturdays or Sundays as needed to maintain the project schedule.
Salary / WagesWill be commensurate with the job description, tasks, abilities, skills, and performance.
