Pay Range: Starting from $20.00 per hour, based on knowledge, skills, abilities, and prior experience.

Schedule: Typically, 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday. This is an on-call position requiring availability for after-hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis. Overtime may be required.

General Description of Duties

The Sewer Maintenance Technician performs a variety of manual duties for the City s Sewer Department, focusing on the repair and maintenance of the sewer system s equipment and infrastructure. The role involves hands-on work with lift stations and grinder stations, as well as general maintenance of buildings, tanks, and grounds. This position requires an individual who is reliable, and capable of working in various environments and conditions.

The Technician works under the direct supervision of a Crew Leader or Sewer Plant Manager.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The following is a representative list of the essential functions and duties of this position. This list is not exhaustive, and management reserves the right to assign additional duties as needed.

  • Wastewater System Operations:
  • Install, maintain, and repair the wastewater collection system, with a specific focus on lift stations and grinder stations.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, or clear sewage blockages and leaks to ensure system functionality.
  • Perform regular maintenance and repairs on buildings, tanks, and piping within the sewer infrastructure.
  • Maintenance & Operations:
  • Conduct lawn and ground maintenance, including mowing and landscaping around city facilities.
  • Perform routine repair and maintenance of small tools and equipment used in the sewer department.
  • Operate and maneuver a variety of heavy construction equipment, such as backhoes, for tasks including excavation, demolition, and material handling.
  • Operate various power tools, light trucks, and other power-driven equipment safely and effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience: A minimum of one year of maintenance experience is preferred.
  • Certifications & Licenses:
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver s License in good standing.
  • A Class B Commercial Driver s License (CDL) is highly preferred.
  • Screening: Must voluntarily submit to and pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
  • Relocation: Must be able to relocate to Freeport, FL 32439, before the start of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Technical

    Skills:

  • Ability to learn the general geographical layout of the City of Freeport within a specified timeframe.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols when working with tools, heavy equipment, and machinery.
  • Experience operating and safely towing heavy equipment with light trucks.
  • Communication & Interpersonal

    Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position requires working in a variety of challenging conditions, including inclement weather, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and around fumes and gasses. The employee will work with electricity, on slippery and uneven surfaces, and around odors and moving objects. The job requires heavy lifting and carrying (over 45 pounds), as well as reaching above shoulders and pulling hand over hand. Good vision, depth perception, color distinction, hearing, and the ability to smell are all required.

The employee must also be able to perform a range of movements including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, and balancing.
