highway maintenance technician ii

this position will operate machinery and engage in manual labor related to job assignments, including rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and the assembly and installation of highway signs.

where you will work your specific responsibilities

upon receipt of the required cdl instructional permit or license, operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.

uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.

performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

the successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities knowledge
  • knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.

  • skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • skilled in operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.

  • ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

  • ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
licensure/registration/certification requirements
  • must possess a valid class "e" driver’s license at the time of hire. Must obtain a class "b" cdl instructional permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid class "b" cdl with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • must obtain certification in temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic) - intermediate level within one year and maintain.
