About the Role
Mechanic in North/Central Mississippi at Southern Electric Corporation (a Quanta Services, Inc. company) is an electrical utility contractor specializing in the construction of high-voltage transmission lines, underground, and distribution lines, as well as emergency restoration services. SEC is a longtime leader in the industry with a strong focus on safety and customer satisfaction.
Mechanic shall possess the ability to operate/drive any truck, including tractor trailers, to support all assigned work activity. A valid commercial driver’s license and three (3) years’ experience are required.
What You’ll Do
- Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains motor vehicles and construction equipment (e.g., pickup trucks, heavy trucks ½ ton to 10 ton GVWR, cranes, power shovels, digger derricks, aerial lifts, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, pumps, compressors, portable generators, hydraulic tools, etc.).
- Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects; dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Examines parts for damage or wear with test equipment and gauges; tests overhauled equipment for operating efficiency.
- May weld or have welded broken parts; may fabricate parts or devices for power and telecommunications construction/maintenance.
- Directs workers in cleaning parts and assists with assembly/disassembly of equipment; repairs, adjusts and maintains specialized machinery (e.g., conductor pullers, tensioners, spacer buggies, drilling and cutting equipment).
- Plans work procedures using charts, manuals and experience; raises equipment for access; removes engines/transmissions/differentials as needed; disassembles units for wear inspection.
- Repairs or replaces parts (pistons, rods, gears, valves, bearings); overhauls or replaces carburetors, fuel systems, generators, starters, pumps; may rebuild crankshafts/cylinder blocks and valve heads.
- Rewires ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels; relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, replaces shock absorbers and seals radiator leaks.
- Repairs damaged bodywork and installs accessories (radios, heaters, mirrors, wipers); identifies safety equipment on equipment and uses operation manuals; performs general equipment cleanup and daily checks.
- Assists with brake/clutch adjustments, service schedules, and capacity charts; setups connections for trailers and ensures loads are secured; adheres to company safety policies.
- Attends prescribed training and is capable of operating most construction equipment and booms as needed; may perform other duties and work in storm restoration operations.
- Must be trustworthy, safety-minded, and aware of safety procedures; able to spot danger and take evasive action as needed.
What You’ll Bring

- Must hold a valid commercial driver’s license and a current Medical Certification Card.
- May obtain light crane certification for boom trucks, etc.
- May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild/repair damaged power systems.
- May attend training classes or seminars for new processes, safety regulations and refresher training.
- All individuals in this classification must meet OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910 requirements for operated equipment.
Physical Qualifications
- Lifting and handling materials up to 60 pounds unassisted; walking and working across uneven terrain.
- Exposure to hot and cold weather; climbing on/off large trucks and equipment.
