About This Role
A Journeyman Lineman at Southern Electric Corporation classification will have received their training in an approved forty-two (42) month apprenticeship program or a certified testing program or must have five (5) years of continuous substation/line construction/maintenance experience. Journeyman Linemen shall have a working knowledge of all aspects of substation/line work and have the capability and expertise to work independently if required.
WhatYou'll Do
- Installs and repairs structures, conductors or equipment used in electrical power or distribution systems.
- Installs and maintains line hardware and erect wooden and/or steel poles and light or heavy-duty transmission towers.
- Splices cables together for overhead transmission lines, customer service lines, or street light lines.
- Strings wire conductors and cable between erected poles and adjust slack, using winch, hoist, or other means.
- Utilizes aerial lift equipment and/or climbs poles and removes and installs hardware, wires, and other equipment.
- Opens/closes switches to isolate or energize line sections.
- Tests lines and equipment for potential and installs grounding devices to de-energize circuits and equipment to perform repairs, adjustments or to remove electrical hazards.
- Capable of calculating setup locations for stringing operations.
- Secures one shots, hold tags, R-switches, hot line holds etc. on lines working near or over.
- Required to hang travelers from poles or towers.
- Ensure that guards and covers are in place for lines, highway, and other obstructions on ROW.
- Ensure that all grounds are in place on stringing equipment grounding blocks etc.
- Supervise conductor stringing operation.
- Capable of operating all construction equipment if needed.
- Capable of using plumb bob, pulling guy wires, and ensuring that poles are plumb before dead ending cond.
- Interpret charts and calculate sag for conductors, using owners required method.
- Capable of working from hanging ladders, walk boards, or baskets on booms for clipping, dead ending cond., etc.
- Capable of hanging and operating carts for spacing bundle conductors.
- Required to set guard poles, string lead line, string conductors, sag, clip, and dead-end conductors.
- Watch over, direct, and train Apprentice linemen working under or with them.
- Direct and ensure that Underground utilities are located.
- Replaces and straightens poles and attaches cross-arms, insulators, and auxiliary equipment to wood poles preparatory to erection.
- Cleans, trims, and splices corresponding conductors by splicing together or by joining ends with compression connections.
- Tests conductors to identify corresponding conductors and to prevent incorrect connections, according to electrical diagrams and specifications.
- Install watt-hour meters and connects service drops between power line and consumer.
- Covers conductors with insulating material.
- Uses rubber gloves, hot sticks, or the live line “bare hand” method to work on and/or repair energized lines to avoid interruption of service.
- May be required to relocate as work requirements demand.
- May be required to hold a valid class “B” commercial driver’s license.
- Need to have certification for light cranes, boom trucks, etc.
- May be required to read and interpret blueprints.
- Drives and operates conveyance machinery equipped with tools and materials to and from job site.
