Role overview

In the role of Civil Construction Inspector (Highways & Roads), you will support field and office engineering work, including inspection of non-structural construction operations, traffic control system compliance, contract change order preparation and review, Water Pollution Control Program enforcement, and related duties as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Resident Engineer with field and office engineering work, including inspection of non-structural construction operations, traffic control system compliance, contract change orders, and Water Pollution Control Program enforcement.
  • Review, inspect, and approve traffic control systems and lane closures in accordance with Caltrans standards.
  • Support personnel in reviewing and approving traffic control system work with relevant experience.
  • Utilize equipment and software for roadway construction inspection, surveying, field testing of materials, and construction office engineering.
  • Operate and apply Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CPM tools (Primavera P3/P6, Sure Trak, Scheduler Analyzer Pro, Microsoft Project).
  • Demonstrate effective communication and supervision; monitor labor compliance and understand subcontracting laws/policies.
  • Knowledge of DBE, DVBE, and small business requirements, including determining CUF of contractors or material suppliers.
  • Understand Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program and General Permit; familiarity with Caltrans Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, and Construction Manual.
  • Maintain proper background clearance when working on or near rail systems.
  • Assist in preparing DRB and DRA position papers and meetings; support responses to preliminary claim findings and DRB/DRA preparations.
  • Prepare claims files, documents, and reports; maintain complete, accurate, and concise records of work and quantities.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree

    • Minimum 2 years of highway/roadway construction inspection experience

    • Experience on Caltrans projects

    • Ability to interpret construction schedules
  • Required Qualifications

    • High School diploma or equivalent

    • At least 3 years of experience

    • Proficiency with MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook)

    • Proven problem-solving and documentation abilities

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    • Willingness to pass drug-screening procedures prior to hire and submit to random/caused testing
