Bridges & Structures Engineering Business Class Leader

We are seeking an energetic and experienced leader to manage our transportation bridges and structures team in Northern California. The role includes leadership, client management, technical oversight, training, business development, and strategic planning.

Responsibilities
  • Provide area leadership of technical capabilities within the Bridges and Structures Business Class.
  • Manage project staffing, resourcing, workload, and resource balancing and BC utilization in coordination with Project Managers and the Area Transportation Manager.
  • Deliver technical guidance, supervise BC staff, and keep QA/QC procedures and best practices.
  • Monitor area performance, support operational managers in monitoring project performance and implementing corrective actions.
  • Lead technical sector growth and support top line growth across all market sectors.
  • Prioritize BC activities across Northern California to implement Business Group objectives.
  • Facilitate BC teamwork, communication, and work sharing across offices, business classes, and staff.
  • Plan and manage multiple projects ranging from small- to large‑size environmental planning and compliance projects.
  • Perform complex assignments and make independent decisions on problems and methods.
  • Direct the work of others to complete required studies, documents and reports in accordance with regulations.
  • Coordinate and present project elements with agencies, stakeholders and the public to build consensus.
  • Act as client manager, project principal and/or PM.
  • Participate actively in projects or manage them to meet assigned utilization rate.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource on projects and programs.
  • Build and retain strong relationships with staff, Project Managers, Client Development managers and HDR staff throughout the SW Region.
  • Provide strategic and tactical input on business trends for local office planning.
  • Manage staff workloads, recommend adjustments and recruitment as needed.
  • Manage training, licensing requirements and continuing education opportunities.
  • Develop a technical mentoring and employee advancement process.
  • Champion marketing opportunities to grow the practice.
  • Support area pursuits and actively participate in proposal development.
  • Identify project needs and recruit professionals to join HDR.
  • Show a “can‑do” problem‑solver approach with strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PE registration in CA.
  • Proven ability to manage Bridges and Structures projects and teams effectively.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience leading transportation projects and teams in this market.
  • Strong structural technical design experience for quality control of staff.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience managing budgets, preparing scopes and developing cost estimates.
  • Experience preparing reports on project financials.
  • Ability to manage the program and staff statewide across multiple offices.
  • Experience building and implementing training and staffing plans, marketing plans, proposal preparation and business group budgets.
  • Experience motivating direct reports.
  • Excellent written, communication and listening skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership, organization, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Understanding of applicable laws, policies and procedures.
  • Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience with contract development and capital improvement implementation.
  • Self‑starter with initiative and a go‑getter attitude.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint or equivalent).
  • Experience in client development and proposal writing prized.
  • Active engagement in professional or industry associations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Professional, Architecture, Engineering or related field.
