Job SummaryThe Structural Engineer 2 provides structural design and engineering support for Transmission and Distribution Substation Design and supports Transmission Line Design projects. The engineer is responsible for producing high-quality engineering drawings, calculations, and specifications for structural steel, concrete foundations, and related components, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and cost efficiency.
This role demands hands-on design expertise, field support capabilities, and a commitment to delivering superior engineering solutions for industrial and utility-scale projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead structural design work for substation and transmission infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with Southern Company design standards.
Prepare and review structural steel and concrete foundation designs using CAD-based and structural analysis tools.
Conduct site walk-downs, attend pre-construction, during construction, and post-construction meetings, and perform field inspections.
Develop cost estimates, material takeoffs, and provide schedule and staffing input for assigned projects.
Coordinate and communicate regularly with design teams, construction services, field services, project management, and vendors.
Provide technical support during the construction phase and respond to field issues promptly.
Participate in design review meetings, support standardization initiatives, and mentor junior engineers and drafters.
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and other applicable safety codes during design and construction.
Handle multiple concurrent projects effectively with strong time management and organizational skills.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required; BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred.
Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) Certification required.
5–7 years of structural engineering experience in heavy industrial or power plant environments.
Experience with seismic, wind, and vibration analysis is a plus.
Prior foundation design experience preferred.
Familiarity with transmission structures is a plus, but not required.
Proficient with structural codes and standards (AISC, ASCE, ACI).
Working knowledge of AWS welding standards and OSHA safety regulations related to steel design.
Strong proficiency with STAAD PRO, and working knowledge of ANSYS, MathCAD, and deep foundation tools such as All Pile, LPILE, FAD Tools.
Experience analyzing and designing structural steel connections.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and CAD-based design tools.
