Description
Camp Mendocino is a residential summer camp located in Northern California, four hours north of San Francisco and spread over 2,000 acres. We provide transportation between San Francisco and Camp at the start and end of the summer. All Camp employees are expected to live, sleep and work a program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF), we are dedicated to providing children and teens with safe, fun places to learn and grow, with professional staff to offer support and guidance, serving as caring mentors and role models.

Position PurposeThe Native American & Environmental Education Coordinator leads our pivotal environmental education program, ensuring all campers increase their environmental awareness, utilizing the surrounding redwood forest, discovery center, nature program, and garden. This position also includes programming Native American education covering native plants and animals, history, and culture. This program should promote academic success through environmental and native education.
Key Responsibilities- Provide fun and engaging educational- and environmental-focused activities for all ages
- Implement activities focused on redwood forest ecosystems, riparian habitats, native species, sustainability, and care for the environment, including recycling and composting
- Maintain the Discovery Center and utilize its current educational aides and books
- Provide guided educational interpretive hikes
- Work with the leadership team to coordinate speakers and guests
- Foster youth development in environmental stewardship
- Participate in and contribute to any environmental advocacy happening around Camp
- Foster character development consistent with BGCSF philosophy
- Participate in all Camp activities, such as: talent shows, camp fires, and flagpole
- When not running programming, engage with assigned village, and assume all responsibilities of a Counselor, including overnight supervision of youth in cabins
- Engage campers with a positive attitude, including participating in cheers, talent shows, and overnight hikes
- Other duties as specified by direct supervisor
- 1 year experience designing and leading interpretive environmental programs and hikes
- Knowledge of redwood forest ecosystems, riparian habitats, native species, environmental sustainability principles, and environmental interpretation techniques
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers and campers
- Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations in a professional manner
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Desire to work outdoors 24/7
- Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting
- Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances
- Background in the green movement
- Background in Native Education
- Knowledge of California Next Generation Science Standards
- Must be able to lift 50lbs.
- Must be able to walk on uneven terrain for at least 3 miles.
- Must be able to stand for 8 hours (with breaks).
- Must be able to work in temperatures ranging from 30° to 100°.
Lodging is provided for all staff on site. Native American & Environmental Education Coordinator will not be required to stay in a cabin with youth on a regular basis, but will be assigned bunk-style indoor housing that may be shared with up to 8 other staff members.
